MKV Issue

I did this recently myself, as one of my friends ran me through it

But you basically install this program onto your PC that links it to your PS3 so you can share files between systems

if you're interested:

1. http://download.cnet.com/PS3-Media-Server/3000-18506_4-75553922.html install the program on the PC / Laptop that has all your Videos you want to watch

2. Run the program on your PC (make sure you leave your PC on with that program open)

3. Open the program and go to Navigation/Share Settings -- Under Shared Folders add the folder that has your videos and hit save (also you can check to hide useless #Transcodes# and file extensions to keep it clean)

4. Go to your PS3 to "Video" section and go down to "Search for Media"choice that should locate your PC and you'll be able to see it under video the name of your PC

5. Under Video now you will have option with your PC's name on it open it and it'll have all your videos (doesn't matter if they are MVK your PS3 will play it that way)

Oh yeah make sure you leave your PC on and that program running or minimized while watching videos on your PS3...shut your PC off or that program and your video playing on PS3 will shut off too

my PS3 is linked to my Laptop (both are wireless and it still works perfectly)

I think the other laptops have that already, but not mine. I have 2 questions: 1) How long is that converter supposed to take? It took two hours to convert 1 video, and then stopped. And 2) If you install that program, who can access it? Because if the other laptops have it, I am able to access their laptops.

No one can access it so long as you have a password on your wireless router

if you or other routers dont have the password then pretty much anyone can hook themselves up to your wireless net even without PS3 Media installed as long as they are in range

i only pick a signal up from my systems

Oh and forgot

as for converting i just ran a test converting 720p Episode 1 of Samurai Champloo, took about 10min for the conversion into AVI of same 720p preset

Just for the sake of it

1. Open Freemake

2. Drag and drop the MVK file into the panel

3. Go to Convert tab, click it and hit "to AVI..."

4. Then for preset leave it as "Same as Source"

5. Hit Convert and done

It should take about 10mins for one 25min~ long episode to convert

Alright. Well I guess I will stick with Freemake instead of the PS3 thing. Well, that solves the problem I had to make this thread. Thanks alot for telling me about Freemake, thanks to you I was finally able to convert MKVs that I have had unconverted for months, it really helped. It's now my favorite program on my laptop. Thanks again :)

I've been using PS3 Media Server for quite some time to transcode videos to the PS3 and watch them on my TV. It's worked pretty well so far, and it's one of the best solutions to dealing with MKV streaming. If you really want to convert MKVs to another format, I suggest Ripbot264. It supports converting to MKV, MP4, and another two which I can't remember. I wouldn't suggest converting MKVs just to view them on your PS3, as that will degrade the quality of the video.

try out http://www.freemake.com/ i mainly use it to rip and convert audio files

but as far as i know it does let you convert mvks into AVI / MP4 etc

it's a pretty user-friendly software hope it helps.

Other then that i use PS3 Media Server to watch mvks through my ps3

Hey Cain, got a little problem with that. I have had Freemake for a few months now, and everytime I use it, slows it down the next time. Now it's taking 24+ hours just to convert 2 files.

You should also ask yourself the question 'Do I need to convert this?'. If the the video is 10bit, then the answer to that question will always be yes (atleast if you want to play them on a PS3 or 360). If the video is 8bit, then you should not need to convert the video. You may need to convert the audio and video, however. You can then remux to mp4/avi with mp4box or avidemux.

If the video needs to be re-encoded, use HandBrake. It is simplest half decent video encoder out there.
