Versus 13 - Vaporware or not?

Now I know that a topic for FF Versus 13 already exists but this one is for the discussion about whether Square's highly pumped up and hyped game that's shown some amazing display of graphical power in it's trailers is real or just a big fat lie.

Versus 13 was announced at E3 2006, more than 6 years ago. Since then, they've released a bunch of trailers, screenshots, updates and Nomura teasing us, saying that the game's 70%, no 80%, no 85% complete and whatever he can't use in it will be put in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, another series which hasn't had a major sequel release in a while. (unless you count 3D, which i don't cuz it's on the damn 3DS and damn it if I'm gonna buy another handheld just to play one game.)

However, the game wasn't announced at this year's E3 either and instead, what we received was a glorious tech demo of Square's new Luminous Engine called "Agni's Philosophy".

Now, just by looking at it, I could tell the PS3 was gonna have problems running those level of graphics.

And then, a few weeks after E3, I read an article in which a Square Enix guy said that delaying the PS3 and 360 life cycles was a very bad choice on behalf of Sony and Microsoft.

Now, why would they say that at this point of time? They've been building a game FOR the PS3 for 6 friggin years and now he thinks that they should move on to developing for the next generation?

I mean, I get that he's the tech director and all but wouldn't that mean that Square would be pushing for a release of a new gen while they develop for the soon-to-be-old gen.

Remember Okami, anyone?

That beautiful kick-ass game that didn't end up doing so well because the developers released it on the PS2 right as the PS3 was being pushed out?

And now Kotaku published a rumor floating around about SE's decision to maybe let the game fade away from people's minds.

Now, normally I don't pay any attention to rumors. I mean, the developers themselves haven't said anything right.

And then it hit me. The developers haven't said ANYTHING. Sure, Nomura keeps asking us to have patience and he said that a new bit of information was coming our way soon ... in MARCH. 4 months ago.

Plus, this rumor is everywhere. IGN, gamespot, you name it.

Add to that the fact that there have been leaks about FF-15 going around, and I'm starting to wonder if they're thinking of canning this project and working on the next gen console game.

I mean, it's only just 6 years of work, right?

Still, I'm trying to keep a positive outlook on things. This game was absent on both E3 this year and last year's Tokyo Game Show. There is still a SLIGHT possibility that Nomura could make a major announcement about it at this year's TGS. That event is scheduled to take place between September 20-23.

That'll be the moment of truth, I suppose. Square will either finally decide to give it's fans the game they've wanted for 6 years or just stick to it's own dumb logic and continue the story of Lightning in a "spectacular sequel that is FF 13-3!".

Your move, Square. Please don't fuck it up and give us the Japanese equivalent of Duke Nukem Forever.

UPDATE - 7/24

Well, according to Square Enix head, they just came out of a meeting involving a presentation about Versus 13 and made a remark about if we saw it right now, it'd knock us off our feet.

Well, at least we're getting some comments back from SE FINALLY! Keep in mind it's been 4 days since this rumor started.

Now I don't know if what they're saying is true or whether it's a ploy to keep us interested in it for another few months. At least this news however, gives us the added hope that they might make an announcement alongside the Lightning Saga and give us a proper trailer of it.

Keep your hopes up, SE fans! Now all we gotta hope for is that it doesn't actually turn out to be shit. *fingers crossed*

Reading this makes me think if SE is having some sort of problem thats why they are not saying anything. Because if they did say something about it being delay some more, it would start to sound like excuses. So they just might as well not say anything....

I am at the point where i dont care about this game. It was announced 6 years ago and we barely know anything about it. Cancelled or not i lost interest in the game years ago.

I doubt FF Versus 13 would get canceled also this game looks really good I wasn’t thrilled when I found out it only entered full production last year I mean what where they doing all that time supposedly working on 13. I’m mean come on they’ve released both originally planned 13 (although one hasn’t come out locally in the US yet) games and now another one. Were they really working on it or where they mostly have their group split amongst the kingdom hearts games they’ve been releasing. Or is it really taking that long I mean after what I’ve seen the graphics look pretty dam good hell the characters some of them actually look Asian I mean how often can you say that about any jrpg. It’s just companies have made games look really good and yet haven’t taken this long usually when a game takes this long it usually suffers for it. What really suck is KH3 won’t be really in dev. until this game is finished.

Well, Square recently made an announcement that they were gonna hold a show to announce their plans for the "Lightning Saga" on September the First.

That delays waiting for the TGS, which would have been 19 days later.

Hopefully, some of the journalists there would press them for updates about Versus 13 and let them realize that the majority of their fanbase really does not care as much about a pink haired girl who's starred in 2 games already as they do about a possible stoic Squall-esque guy they've only seen in limited trailers speaking his natural Japanese language.

I really hope Versus sees the light of day. I will be very disappointed if it ends up being vaporware. The little bit we saw of it looked really really awesome!!!

The only reason why Kotaku made up the rumor was to get SE to give info on whats going on with the game. And they totally made up the rumor because they didnt even give any info on the sources that they said they had, no one likes Kotaku anyways. But im glad the game is still in developement.
