Upgrade PS3 Hard Drive Questions

I have a few questions about replacing and or upgrading a PS3 hard drive. If you can answer any one of these or all then please do. And let me establish that I already know the whole 2.5" sata 5400rpm fat32 stuff. and that my ps3 is a 20gb that i bought yesterday for cheap so it has no data on it that i need to transfer or backup.

1. I have read on different forums and websites that rather than buying one of those internal hard drives, you can just have an external one that is formated fat32 and such and plug it in through the usb. Will this actually work as a stable hard drive like a new internal one would?

2. If an external one does work, can someone give me a link to some of them?

3.. Does anyone know if the success rate of replacing a hard drive in a ps3 is very high? i would rather not replace it and lose my entire ps3 since i just bought it. It may have been cheap but not THAT cheap.

4.. Will this hard drive work? It is cheap and looks like its the right specs but i want to make sure.

I think that is all the questions i have for now.

Well, the hard drive you linked to wouldnt work for a PS3. The drive you are looking at is Ultra ATA, also known as Parallel ATA. PS3s use SATA, Serial ATA. Definitely keep it a 5400RPM drive, as the 7200RPM can overheat the system. Replacing the hard drive itself is really easy. It should take you no less than ten minutes, even if you don't know what you're doing. There are plenty of guides online, and I'm pretty sure there's even an official one on the Sony website. I replaced my 120GB with a 500GB and it's run wonderfully ever since!

As for using an external drive, I have no idea, but if I had to hedge a guess I don't think that would work...

Gor using an external, that does NOT work as a replacement for an Internal. The PS3 will ONLY install on an INTERNAL hard drive. The only "external" you could possibly use is a standard desktop SATA hard drive, if you have a cable that can plug into the slot where the hard rive goes in the PS3 and plug the other end into the hard drive. This would be "external", because only a 2.5 inch SATA hard drive, which is a laptop hard drive, will fit inside the PS3 hard drive bay.
