PS3 controller stuttering?

I recently bought a used PS3 from a local video game store. I've had it less than a week, but the controller is acting up. I noticed that when I push the controller up, as if to move a character forward, the character will stutter instead of walking normally.

I've tried to find information online, but can't really find anything relevant. There were suggestions of cleaning the controller to solve semi-similar problems, but I'm not sure if that will really help. Besides, I already used a damp paper towel to try to wipe out the cracks around the base of the analog stick, and that made no difference.

Any ideas? I guess if all else fails, I could take it back to the store and explain the situation. They're usually really good about replacements and stuff like that.

I'd go ahead and take it back. I've never actually had that happen, so I can't really say what's wrong (I can think of a few things it could be, but not that familiar with the inside of the controller to be honest). It's generally safer to take it back rather than risking further damage with quick fixes. Just my opinion.

If it's used, it could just be the last person was really mashen the hell out of the controller and it's starting to go bad. I have an older XBox360 based PC controller that is starting to act in a similar fashion because I go crazy on the thing when I'm playing fighting games.

If you have a friend or relative that also has a PS3 I'd ask if you could use their controller to see if it's just limited to the one(s) that came with the unit. If it's just limited to your controller. I'd take the whole thing back and tell them what's going on, because if someone was willing to trade in a beat up controller. Then I'm sure they're willing to trade in a faulty PS3.

If any controller acts up then I would definitely take it back. It shouldn't be your job to fix problems with the unit this soon after buying.
