To save time. Sometimes I'll go for speed and distance... but even doing it faster, without the weights I need to go closer to 5-6 miles before I feel the same burn. Although when I do the obstacle course... That's plenty of a workout without weights, in spite of being less than a full mile. Gets my entire body involved in different ways.. and I never set it up the same way, so there is no getting used to the way it's set up.

Low walls, crawl tunnels, hurdles, climbing walls. I got inspired watching a Parkour training video... and so I incorporate that into my classes too.

I cant stand running with weights

I can barely walk carrying super heavy stuff, let alone running with it, haha. When I was in basic and had to carry around my duffel bag and M16, I just wanted to fall over and die. And after we got our uniforms and had to carry all that crap back to the dorms on the other side of base... hurgh.

A couple times we had to hustle with all our crap and I was convinced my clumsy butt was going to trip and snap my ankle in half. I was the first one off the bus and had to yell at everyone to hurry to the dorms because my TI was too busy being a douche somewhere, I'm convinced.

Ever participated in stuff like crossfit?

A couple of my friends got into it a while ago and seem to really like it. I think when my schedule regulates and I can actually sleep at normal times at a regular schedule, I'll feel more up to working out and trying to do stuff liked I used to. I did indoor rock climbing for a little bit before I got stuck back on nights.

One time I went rock climbing then proceeded to a krav maga session. My arms were buzzing--it was absurd.

Better than me. I have noodly arms, haha. I'm also a little bit unbalanced, but I'll go ahead and blame the military for that. Makes a good scapegoat! I took weight lifting for a semester in high school because I'm too uncoordinated for team sports and I can't swim, so that kind of limited my options for PT credits.

Doesn't the military have you do push-ups, pull-ups and resistance type exercises along with the overly excessive amounts of cardio? :P

Crossfit can be really good, or really bad. Some people thrive in the random nature of the workouts, others can't keep up. It's great because it promotes all kinds of fitness, not just strength or stamina. It's bad because the workouts are not tailored to each individual's needs. I've attended a couple of sessions, but it just wasn't for me. I'll stick to my own extreme style ^_^

Today I did my run with full weights in 12 minutes instead of the usual 15. It felt amazing. Not sure how much faster I can go with the weights on, but I'll find out after a few more days of this.

Mute, eventually you're going to be able to flash step and gain super powers. I'm convinced, haha.

Please, I am in the Air Force. The only military service worse about PT than us is the Navy, haha. Our PT test involves sit ups (which I can usually max), push ups (which I can barely do with my noodly arms), a 1.5 mile run (which I detest), and a waist tape (which I max because I am teeny weeny). They did instate minimums that made people upset and cry manly tears, but I can meet the minimums and I am out of shape like whoa, so these people who can't do it are worse off than me.

Pull ups haven't been a part of my PT since basic training, and that was an extra thing that got you unimportant accolades, so I completely disregarded them. The Army, I believe, are actually the branch that does excessive amounts of running, to the point that many of them complain that even the Marines don't run as much as they have to.

People already tell me my typing speed counts as a super power >.<

I honestly don't know about gaining super powers, but I did read this book on how to turn yourself into a batman type super hero, and I'm doing fairly well at that. ^_^

Batman type superhero? u mean a criminal? :D

@Mute I won't run with weight for fear of putting unnecessary strain on my knees, the only things I will add weight for are things like pull-ups, core exercises, push-ups anything that I don't use barbells and dumbbells for. Its more a matter of necessity than preference tho, if I don't add weight I go indefinitely.

@EmotionalOutlet I'm close to maxing out (one of) the army's fit test(s) which is (for max score, not minimum): 3 mile run in 18 min, 20 pull ups and 100 sit ups in 2.5 min.

Problem with this kind of training is that it prevents mass muscle hypertrophy and promotes a leaner, more ripped body type.....*ugh* disgusting.

Ha, the other day at work someone told me I type quickly and scarily, and then asked if I was a robot. I've apparently always typed loudly and angrily--it's been a complaint I've heard since I was in high school. KEYBOARD SUBJUGATION.

I'm rather okay with the fact that we only get a minute each to do our sit ups and push ups, because I really don't want to have to attempt to break my noodly arms over a period of two minutes. And I don't want to talk about how fast I run a mile and a half, haha. Let's just say until I joined the military, I've never even run a mile straight without stopping. I hate running.

And I find leaner body types to be more attractive. Excessive amounts of muscle scares me. Meep.

Isn't leaner usually viewed as better because you're a smaller target to aim at? Or are you trying to be like Sloth in FMA and be 900lbs of muscle that moves at 100mph?

On the first point: ya most ppl will agree with that

On the second point: I wish ;)

Ya most ppl find bulk unattractive but its the road less traveled, and a long lonely one at that :P

Getting a six-pack or getting shredded is really easy but getting 25 inch arms and a 50 inch chest? Now THATS hard :D

I will never claim to be the most fit person in the world, far from it in fact.. If I didn't have such a long stride, there is no way I'd be able to keep up with Sarah on our runs... and I don't even wear weights!

The distance isn't a problem. I could do up to 4 at a jog/run if I had to, but damn, the speed we do it in.. If I didn't like pushing my limits and all that good stuff, I'd tell her to either slow down, or leave me behind. lol

It's a lot of fun. But yea, I'm just glad I can keep up. Probably won't ever progress to the whole weighted running thing. Instead I'll stick to lifting weights, and gymnastic style exercises. My height is a bit of a handicap for some moves, but I can still incorporate some of the moves into my routine.

Of all the running things we do, my favorite is the obstacle course. It's so much fun, and it has practical applications if I ever need to get away from someone. Which I'll admit isn't too terribly likely given that an attacker would prefer to go for the smaller girls, but if it ever does, I'm ready for it.

And terrifying, haha.

I've only gone running a couple times with Java and he has a tendency to leave me behind, which only encourages me to just walk. There are very few males I'm willing to run with, and that's because they don't complain quite as much that my old lady shuffle is making their shins hurt, haha.

You can avoid the decreasing range of motion problem by doing full range lifts. You probably won't get as big, but you'll avoid nasty looking bulges and muscles that are only good for lifting.

Leaving your workout partner behind is one of the worst things you can do, because it makes them lose their motivation, even if you keep yours. Slow down a little until they can keep up with you, even if they have to push a little harder to do it.
