Seraphim
Is there a way I can reset my computer to factory standards without the use of recovery disks?I use Windows Vista if that helps any.The problems with the computer are:-When I try to save an image anywhere (through right click -> save as) my computer lags severely then shuts down Windows Explorer.-When I try to install a program of any type I get an error saying "The service cannot accept control messages at this time" followed by "** requires administrator rights to continue, but could not elevate (unexpected error 1016)"
† L4ugh
Have you tried Windows Recovery? It should be in your control center, then you can just restore it to a time before the problem began. That is the only way I know of that doesn't involve a disk. If it's a virus you might be better off just reinstalling the whole OS though.
Seraphim
My friend is telling me to just have a friend make a recovery disk for me but that takes time haha. I'll try Windows Recovery now.------It keeps giving me the message that it can't accept control messages.
† L4ugh
Well if you are already having problems then it's really a bit late for making a recovery disk. You should do that after a fresh install of the OS.
Seraphim
How would I go about doing that?Haha I'm not very savvy when it comes to this stuff anymore.
† L4ugh
In the Backup and Restore section of your control panel there is two links on the top left for creating a backup image and a repair disk. You will need admin powers for both though. Like I said before it's best to do it after a fresh install of your OS so you know that you aren't backing up anything you don't want to. I would also wait until you have installed all updates as well. This will cut down on the restore time it will take every time you use your backup, because you won't have as many updates to reinstall.Do you have a retail pc like an HP or is it home built
Seraphim
It's a newer Asus desktop that ran Windows 7 when I first got it, but my hard drive melted and I had to put my other hard drive in it (Windows Vista).
† L4ugh
Well that really sucks. Was asking because if you had the original hdd then you could of probably used the built in backup on it, because almost all retail pcs have that now. Did your asus desktop not come with a factory recovery disk, my netbook has one.
Seraphim
Actually, it came with no disks whatsoever, which seemed odd to me.
