† ballard
I've made bootable flash drives in the past, but for some reason I can't get this 4gb flash drive to work properly. I'm trying to install windows 7 from it. Here are the methods that I've tried.http://www.thinkcomputers.org/install-windows-7-from-a-usb-flash-drive/http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/01/21/seven-steps-to-a-bootable-windows-7-thumb-drive/My laptop refuses to recognize it. It just keeps saying "No bootable device"... I've change the boot priorities to boot from usb first. I know for sure the hard drive is working because I got it last night and tested it. My laptop can boot from usb because I've installed windows from it before... with this same flash drive.Any help would be highly appreciated. If you need any additional information feel free to ask. † L4ugh
If the labtop isn't recognizing the drive at all, then you are probably getting a bad connection. If you know the thumb drive is functional then I would try cleaning your USB connectors. I have the same problem some times because my computer sets on the floor. I usually just use a can of compressed air and blow the dirt out. Just make sure you hold the can upright so you'll only be spraying air, and that the labtop is powered down with the battery pulled. † ballard
Thanks for the suggestion L4ugh. I tired cleaning out the usb ports, but unfortunately that didn't solve my problem.Edit: Actually oddly enough I tried it again and it actually worked. The strange thing is that the usb ports didn't seem dirty at all.I'm currently installing ubuntu... I was going to lock this thread, but I might need some help getting this to work with my windows 7 install.
† L4ugh
How old is the thumb drive? I can't get some of my really old ones to recognize sometimes even when I clean the connectors. I think it is just from years of being yanked out of the usb port. I usually just try to avoid using them because it's always hit and miss, sometimes they'll work and other times they won't. Glad to see you got it working though.
† ballard
It's a few years old. After a lot of trial and error I finally got it to work with windows 7.
