The third one ties in slightly with Tenchi GXP, which is in the same continuity as the OVAs. Universe and Tokyo are set in separate continuities, but rely upon you being familiar with the characters already, especially Tokyo. You could probably watch Universe without watching the OVAs, since it introduces the girls gradually, unlike Tokyo. War on Geminar is its own separate thing. If you only like newer anime, you can check it out without having seen the other shows. deanzel Posted January 5, 2017 Report Share Posted January 5, 2017 I'd watch the original OVAs first. The first is excellent and the second one is very solid as well. The third OVA is a bit of a let down and kind of goes off on some random arcs. After that, I'd really recommend watching Tenchi Universe which was probably my favorite adaptation in the series as it is basically an alternate take on the OVAs. If after that you still like the series, continue on.
