tbbttbbt
I dont have an antivirus system installed just yet but I'm planning to do so and want to hear what you guys had and why. I used to have AVIRA Free Antivirus but I got fed up with the ammount of ads so I'm trying to avoid that
Catar
Best antivirus is learning what to avoid on the internet, to be honest. Besides that, Microsoft's built in Security Essentials is effective enough. Most antivirus software all uses the same database, so there's little difference between the various scanners in practice, and Microsoft's does end up using less resources on average. If you want something up the chain a bit, Malwarebytes is probably a good choice.
Schattenfang
+1 on Malwarebytes. They often have cheap promotions up for their premium version.
Cryptic
Malware and viruses aren't the same. Since you're asking for an antivirus, I'd suggest bitdefender free. It works nicely and isn't too invasive.
adonismarte
Malwarebytes is definitely one that is nice, I was always a fan of AVAST Free Antivirus mainly because they have a sandbox feature that allows you to open things in a contained environment in case it goes bad. It is also able to do full scans before Windows actually loads also a nice feature. My only advice is to turn off the sounds, can get annoying. NeutralHatred
When it comes to free antiviruses, they are all roughly the same as most of the automatic settings that are important are all manual. Don't try to rely on a free AV. Av-comparatives is a good site to use when selecting an AV. However, I believe their charts are based on the paid version.
OrderChaos
Assuming you're on Windows, you can use TinyWall to adjust the built-in Windows Firewall.https://tinywall.pados.hu/ A firewall is enough for most people. However, a routine anti-virus scan is okay. Be smart about what you download and install on your computer, especially if it's free software. Lots of websites promote software that are bundled with spyware. If you download a program and are unsure of its safety, you can scan it online at VirusTotal. VirusTotal was acquired by Google and scans files using the most popular malware scanners on the market so you get a comprehensive picture from multiple sources whether the program is safe or not.https://www.virustotal.com/ For an anti-virus program, you can use Microsoft Security Essentials or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/safety/pc-security/microsoft-security-essentials.aspxhttps://www.malwarebytes.com/ I prefer Malwarebytes because it's an on-demand virus scanner rather than a program that's always running in the background. Use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. They are the most popular browsers for a reason. You should have the latest version or the extended support version. The extended support version is a slightly older version but is more stable and is intended for businesses while the latest version has the latest features.https://enterprise.google.com/chrome/chrome-browser/https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/ Show hidden files and folders but keep the important system files hidden.https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files Show file name extensions (so you know if you're clicking on a disguised exe or msi file).https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/865219/how-to-show-or-hide-file-name-extensions-in-windows-explorer

It is useful as a set-it-and-forget-it deal, but it really sucks if you want a more custom/targetted scan.

GreenManSK
I use AVG for many years and didn't have any problems with it.
DKLTN_DKLKTN
Windows Defender for everyday use and a scan with Malwarebytes antimalware once in a while seems a good way to go for me. As somebody write above, to be careful on the internet is enough
ElementalCards
AVG or Comodo Internet Security. Though Avast isn't too bad.

EccentricOne
I like Avast, but best to think about what you run on your computer more than relying on antivirus Scenario 1: person A durrr should I run totally legit copy of game of thrones s08e01.exe, i have no antivirus, seems like a great idea, oh no my computer sprouted legs and is now part of an army of robots bent on destroying humanity Scenario 2: same thing but hoping avast notices before you're too late Scenario 3: noticing a video download would never be an exe file and whats more that shows not even in season 8 yet
TheShadowDragon
I believe Avast and CCleaner are the best Antivirus softwares. I used it lots of times and no signs of virus on my laptop.

Super Kal
CCleaner is a good one, i have used that in the past... but i would also recommend some adware blockers as well while you surf the web
tribblesome
I use a mix of Avast and Malwarebytes, haven't had issues with viruses in years....but then again I'm also good at knowing what to avoid on the internet
EccentricOne
The irony is CCleaner is currently in the middle of a malware scandal. Go look it up, its said millions of computers got infected by it Glad I don't use that
