Yeah, I'll probably end up waiting till Cyber Monday and just going all out.

Get a solid raid set-up, with redundancy, so I don't have to look for 10+TB of data again.
xD
Just gotta be proactive and read more on it.

I've built custom gaming PCs before, but never have I done any kind of server so it's a bit new to me.

Haha, yeah good call. I was in the same boat in the beginning as well, never ventured much into the world of servers. But really what I have built is just more of a seedbox than a server.

I tried the linux route, but after countless hours of help from Sakura, JohnFlower and IkarosBD, I eventually switched over to a simple Windows 7 setup with limited linux abilities (XDCC bot and irc bouncer) and that's been running solid. Plus I don't have to bother the other guys <3

I honestly mainly use ZFS just because it was built into FreeNAS and was easy to use by default there. However, it does provide some very nice features for protecting against data corruption, integrity and automatic repair features, and better support for very large sized pools (like what I have).

just ordered 4x4TB more

Now now... You just love making me jealous... Hahaha....

How about donating one of those HDD of yours I'll play for the shipping :-)

Anyways all jokes aside. How do you explain all that space to your family or friends? For me just asking people for HDDs that are just lying around they ask me what you put on all that space. And they aren't anime people... Cry!!! Things get tricky

3tb x 3 2.5" - 70gb free

1tb x 3 2.5" - 50gb free

2tb 3.5" - 300gb free

2tb 3.5" - 100gb free

1tb 3.5" - 15gb free

Organization is PITA, should probably  catagorise it properly, too many copies of anime that are duplicates or similar but different scene releases. Could save at least a terabyte, but would probably  be filled up in a months time:(

I'm in the process of reorganizing:

Here's what I have:

8TB - Anime (85%Full)

6TB (3TB+3TB LVM) - Non Anime Media & a disorganized mess of downloads. (71%Full)

2TB - Documents and Downloads (96%Full)

2TB - Old Backups (58% Full)

1TB - Current Downloads & VM Storage (95%Full)

1TB - Games (49%Full)

240GB SSD - System

8TB - Empty - Using as temp space for moving stuff around.

8TB (4TB+4TB LVM) - Empty

1TB SSD - Empty

Here's my goal:

8TB - Anime

8TB - More Anime

8TB (4TB+4TB LVM) - Snapraid Parity.

6TB (3TB+3TB LVM) - Non Anime Media: Movies, Music, etc.

4TB (2TB+2TB LVM) - Software/Games Install Files

1TB - Current Downloads

1TB - Current Games & VM Storage

1TB SSD - Documents

240GB SSD - System

4TB External - Documents Backup

128GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD (OS/Programs) + Seagate Firecuda 2TB SSHD (Mass Storage for games, music, media, etc. SSD is solely Windows + Programs and nothing else. Pictures, Documents, etc is all on my SSHD)

Still doing just fine thus far. Although, in recent months, I've been losing random files (namely anime episodes...) here and there. Not sure if it's Windows tripping or something with the hard drive.

It's a bit annoying since I don't catch it right away until I go to watch the series. Just had it last night as I was finishing Koyomimonogatari, Ep.9 was missing. I was in the middle of binge watching the last handful of episodes (Like 8-12) and ended up watching episode 9 online to keep my flow going.

Luckily it's just single episodes like that generally but I had a couple worse cases once or twice (these were the first cases). I remember one case, I lost the entire first season of Dragon Ball Super but luckily I was able to just bring up properties, goto 'Previous Versions' and snag Season 1 from the respective system restore.

After that started occurring though, I backed up the Dragon Ball series because I'd be rather unhappy if it got wiped and I couldn't restore. Speaking of which, I also have a 750GB Toshiba External HDD. I got it during a sale (It was a lightning deal, iirc) on Amazon back in December 2014. Still going strong. I was a little unhappy afterwards though at the time, I remember whatever I paid for the 750GB on Amazon, I later saw I could get 1TB for the same price directly from Toshiba. RIP... (Not that I needed it but... more for my buck)
