lemmingllama
Numbers. When something looked at a pile of rocks, they percieved how many rocks there were. Therefore, they knew how many, making numbers come first. Letters came after languages were made
Reptoholic
Even when people did not spell they could discern when their were multiples of an object.
Alegend1994
I have to agree with all of the above numbers must have come first. Letters came from wanting to express ourselves but number are absolutely essential for survival, distance judging, running & sharing are all based around numbers and mathematics. Alegend1994
Numbers: because after all the facts listed by the users above I wouldn't want to look like a fool by saying the alternative. You should say what you really think after all we have all given our opinions on why we think it's numbers along with opinionated reasons, so there's no reason why we couldn't actually be wrong after all it only takes one great piece of evidence or reasoning to defeat our opinions. the man773
Numbers probably came first, organization was crucial if you wanted to keep track of your meager supplies before (or right at) the dawn of the first civilizations where socialization began to become a very useful tool. † Mute point
Numbers because there are 26 core letters in the alphabet, and we wouldn't know that without numbers. (Other languages have more letters, but they are based on the core 26 for latin based languages anyway.

shyguysteve
the previous posts choosing numbers aren't bad with their decisions to why they chose numbers but its a bit opinionated.the first 5 posts claim that early 'human related' life could already know how many of whatever they see, but just knowing doesn't mean anything unless you could communicate to increase your chances of survival. ergo numbers; the categorization of what we see compared to letters; general communications with each other is a coin toss guess.honestly I know the answer because I started the thread, its a trick question because numbers were both the first things we used to communicate and categorize.if you chose numbers you were obviously correct but the reasons were not as constructed as I thought they would be. little more my fault cause I posted this not in the mako section xP. Leviathan
I will have to get with numbers here. Archeological research tells us that people at the early times of this world used to their voice and hieroglyphics like drawings to communicate each other. So letters came a lot later. Also it is safe to assume that prehistoric people could perceive the 'number' of things like stones lying in the ground or people living near the river, etc.
Gero50
Numbers came first. We had to learn to count before we could form true words. Words are of represented by numbers in any modern language. Even neanderthal man had to count wood cores for his fire before we could speak, and explain how to do it.
