Nogdev
I used to watch Dragon Ball in around 2002-2003, Cardcaptor Sakura at the same time, Digimon in 2004-05, Beyblade at the same time, Naruto & One Piece in 2006 and DBZ till 2010 (wow that's only last year!). But I didn't knew that Japanese animation media was called anime (I knew it was Japanese since Digimon Season 1 was shown with Japanese opening and ending, and various references were given about the show being in Japan), but in 2006-07, I first came around with the word "Anime", while searching about info on One Piece. At that time I didn't got what it meant, But in 2007, I was bought an internet connection and I started searching for DBZ downloads. It was then the picture was made clear to me that anime and cartoons are different.
enarose
I realized many years ago when I first saw DBZ. The animation blew my mind. I wondered why it was so good and when I got to the credits saw that their names where japanese

Renteka-bond
I first realized it when I saw Eureka Seven on adult swim. Which is funny, because I'd seen Kikkaider, Inuyasha, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, etc, well before Eureka Seven.

Seiji
Well Pokemon was the first anime I saw, and it was fairly easy for me to tell that it was different. I think I knew it was Japanese from the beginning, but I can't remember exactly how I came to that conclusion.

m2425
All the way back in 1995 when I first watched DBZ, saw the the animation styles were different and that in anime characters die in a "real way".
savedgray
I think I always was able to distinguish between the two, but I treated them all the same - as animated series - until high school, when I started leaning more towards anime.
