  1. Gai Daigoji from Nadesico Seriously, the dude was awesome, I don't think the series benefited from his death at all, and he would have added a bit of spice to the series if he stuck around Most of the cast from Basilisk, very depressing series, but very good, some deaths you were glad to see but others were a bit heart wrenching Shishioh (however it's spelled) from Kenshin, it was absolutely necessary and couldn't end any other way, but still, he was a badass and pretty cool villain Mikoto from Kannon, she was awesome, I really wish there was a way to keep the fox Mikoto around The Doctor from Eden of the East was unjust, not that major on my list, but since unjust deaths are part of the topic it deserves being mentioned Several of the hits from Noir
  2. you guys should really look through the older posts on the thread it would help a lot. In the beginning all us anime fans didn't even have to think about superman getting beaten to a bloody pulp by goku, but evidence was brought in by people who bothered to do the research and we seriously underpowered pre-crisis superman, things like him sneezing and destroying a galaxy on accident, not a small feat, or him being sent flying by a supernova but only slightly fazed, and him crossing to the ends of the universe in a matter of seconds, the two are more comparable than u realize and more than I like to admit, but there it is. While I agree that by the end of DBZ goku would win, it would not be as small and simple a fight as u might think
  3. if you haven't allready seen it Ruroni Kenshin meets all your criteria and is in my opinion the best action anime series ever made, but it is on the more realistic side of things which bleach and dbz are not. Gunslinger Girl, there are two different versions of this, the first was done before the manga was finished, the second done later. I have not seen the second though I have heard good things, but I can vouch for the first. First and foremost it has an excellent story, it is a bit more serious so there is not much humor, but it is an excellent action series and a slight tear jerker Samurai Champloo, story is good but it capitalizes on action and comedy in even amounts, has a hip hop slant to it (I personally hate rap and hip hop culture, but I had no problem whatsoever with this), the story doesn't reach any real depth until halfway through but it is descent. Baccano has a descent amount of action but it capitalizes on several stories that occur simultaneously, it's basic idea is that for any event there are as many stories as there are people to tell them. It was very well done, however it jumps around a lot in the beginning and you can't really figure out what is going on until halfway through as it skips between 2 time periods and 2 locations. Some people are put off by this, but if you can be patient until half-way through your in for a real treat. Also meats your comedy requirements almost exactly. also, if you haven't seen them, cowboy bebop, trigun, bamboo blade, basilisk (lot of action, good story, not much comedy), Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, Dragonaut the Resonance, My Hime, and Fate/Stay Night Also, if you don't mind venturing outside the action genre a bit Great Teacher Onizuka, an ex gang member becomes a teacher, has a lot of comedy and a descent story, a good watch all around School Rumble, mainly comedy, action is minimal, the story and plot are not predictable, but they are a bit random and I wouldn't call it spectacular, but it is my favorite comedy and is related to action vaguely. May not be up your alley, but worth mentioning if you want to venture out of the action genre a bit
  4. you keep stressing unlimited, I have a problem with that as it is too undefined. Just because there is no way to measure a thing does not make it unlimited. We might call the molecules of H20 in the ocean unlimited because we have no way of measuring it, but it is still a finite quantity. I think it is safer to say that it was impossible to measure pre-crisis superman's abilities than to say they were unlimited. In early DBZ they had devices to measure a persons power, there is to my knowledge no equivalent in the superman universe, as such it is a misnomer to call his abilities unlimited. I would like to thank the guy who showed the superman comics to give us a better idea of superman's pre-crisis abilities as we have been underestimating him. An important note is superman destroying a solar system with a sneeze, while his lack of control goes a long way in proving a lack of training and skill, it does give a good measure of his power as there was a definite limit to the damage done by it. Taking that into account, lets use it as a measure of physical strength and multiply the force it would take to destroy a solar system and multiply it by a hundred and say that's the force of his punch. Now to get a relevant estimate of goku's power lets take vegeta destroying a planet for fun on his way to earth before his confrontation with goku, which is before goku's confrontation with frieza, which was before cell, which was before majin buu. Now, lets take into account that a major part of goku's training is in controlling his power to do precisely what he intends, i.e. he could use a beam to put a hole through a planet the size of a penny but with enough force to destroy the planet 3 times over, or he could destroy a planet with just barely enough force to do so. I think it is safe to say that by the time he beat frieza goku could destroy a solar system with a beam, but barely so, as such I think its safe to say that pre-crisis superman could indeed defeat frieza without breaking a sweat. Now lets say that goku became five times more powerful by the time he got back to earth from defeating frieza, then lets say he multiplied that strength another ten times during the cell games where he died, which makes 20 times the power it would take to destroy a solar system, as such pre-crises superman would beat cell in terms of raw power, then lets take into account the training goku took in the afterlife before majin buu came into the picture and say he became 10 times stronger than before which puts us at 200 times the amount of force needed to destroy a solar system, however goku never used his full power or ever revealed how much stronger he became during the afterlife so it is debatable. by these calculations, by the time majin buu comes on to the scene goku is probably about twice as powerful as pre-crisis superman which is to say it would be an interesting fight, and superman probably is not as strong as majin buu and definitely not as strong as kid buu. You guys are welcome to disagree with my measurements, as I said, there is no real way of gauging pre-crisis superman's strength because they lacked the ability, but based on the bit of information we have I believe that this is a fair and accurate comparison
  5. again, slight problem with superman is that he never goes up against weapons worse than lasers and guns, he rarely fights things that aren't human, simply put, there is no real way to gauge his strength because there are no opponents on his level in his world, simply put, goku goes up against alien beings on a regular basis, we could also debate weather superman could stand up to frieza, cell, or even piccolo as they all are superhuman, and I highly doubt superman would stand a chance against majin buu, superman never faces a challenge that comes close to most of the challenges in the DBZ series, in the dragon ball series when goku is a child they would be a match and superman would win in the earlier parts of that series, and may even win in the later parts, but DBZ and on goes way beyond anything superman ever faces, as such superman is not a match for goku, and probably not for half the main fighting cast hero and villain of DBZ
  6. I have to 2nd school rumble, never read the manga as I don't read comix, japanese or otherwise (in comparison to the books I normally read, manga just doesn't satisfy), but school rumble is my favorite series and them canceling the 3rd season and throwing 2 crappy episodes to rush everything in a way that sucked and made no sense irritates me to no end....
  7. I am surprised, usually when a sub vs. dub discussion goes on its usually dominated be elitist sub fans (I do not mean to imply that sub fans are all elitist, merely that sub fans who are elitist tend to be very vocal). I prefer dubs like many here due to laziness and convenience, however, one thing I never deny is that fan made subs tend to be the most accurate, there is a censorship that occurs when anything is done by a business in the states that removes most cultural references, such as chan, san, and domo suffixes to a persons name to denote rank, it irritates the daylights out of me as there are many jokes and conversations that cease to make sense as a result. Or the replacement of hitokiri batosai with batosai the man slayer and calling a sakaba sword a reverse blade sword in the kenshin series. I usually don't have a problem with dub voice acting, but there are times when bad voice acting ruins a series, a prime example for me is the dub version of card captor sakura, on top of them changing good song lyrics to something extremely cheesy in the us, the voice acting was atrocious in my opinion. On the whole I say dub because I am lazy, but I would encourage checking out fan made subs (as the commercial subs are severely lacking) to see the difference, some may find the changes un-acceptable
  8. School Rumble, been at the top of my list for half a year, indecisive about 2nd and 3rd fav's but the first is simple
  9. School Rumble.... they had to cancel it on a cliff hangar, the heartless bastards...
  10. Tenchi Muyo for 3 reasons 1st he's a powerful fighter, maybe not the most powerful but powerful enough 2nd his blood will likely, though not guaranteed, grant him longevity, and with hundreds of years there is much you can do 3rd and most importantly, he's surrounded by hot babes who want to jump his bones, its a good life
  11. thanks for the suggestions, I've seen mahoromatic around but never got around to checking it out and never heard of moon phase, the suggestions are much apreciated
  12. 1. Judas Priest 2. Megadeth 3. Motorhead 4. Iron Maiden 5. AC/DC enough said
  13. Best book I've read was Stardust by Neil Gaiman (Neverwhere and Anansi's Boys are also good, haven't gotten around to American God's yet) Robert Jordan- Wheel of Time Series (unfortunately he died before finishing them) Mercedes Lacky- Various novels, too many to name but the Obsidian Trilogy stands out in excellence, did not get into the heralds of valdemar though Terry Prachett- Discworld series, best comedy books I've read Piers Anthony- Xanth series, not bad but discarded it when I discovered discworld R.A. Salvatore- Drizzt books, and the spear wielder trilogy Robin Hobb- the Farseer trilogy, the Liveship Traders trilogy, the Tawny Man trilogy, curently starting the Soldiers Son trilogy, amazing author Kirsten Britain- Green Rider series the Bible by various authors ( a good read but very dry) Niccolo Machieveli- The Prince (knows what he's talking about, but historical examples are inaccurate at best, and he is very jaded) Laura K. Hamilton- Anita Blake Vampire series (first 4 books are excellent then goes downhill, by book 10ish your pretty much reading porn, no story just eroticism, how that happened is beyond me, but it becomes pure trash) and thats all I can think of off the top of my head
  14. red dwarf is awesome, but there was an american adaptation of the series as well which I don't recommend (not that I gave it much chance) but red dwarf is classic, especially if you read the hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy
  15. This is an incomplete list of all I've seen. I am primarily into dubs, while fan made subs are always better and truer translations I hate reading subtitles and will always pick a dub over a sub no matter how good the series. I am primarily looking for comedy, weather romantic, harem, action, whatever. If there is any series that is an epic must see (like kenshin, evangelion, ranma 1/2, or elfen lied) feel free to mention it. Please do not recommend anything you found mediocre, while I watched anything placed in front of me when I first started watching anime, I have grown very picky and there are many series I've watched that I would never consider now. If any one knows a good comedy not on my list, or something epic, I would greatly appreciate the input Fruits Basket, School Rumble, Baccano!, Ouran High School Host Club, Great Teacher Onizuka, Negima!?, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Cowboy Bebop, Ranma 1/2, Fushigi Yugi, Trigun, Fate Stay Night, Ruroni Kenshin, BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad, Bamboo Blade, Kanon 2006, Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, Gunslinger Girl, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Full Metal Panic! (all of them), Welcome to the Nhk, Slayers, Serial Experiments Lain, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Vandread, Raxephon, Bleach, Sayuki, Zoids, Excel Saga, Chobits, Please Teacher!, Please Twins!, Shuffle, Tenchi Muyo, Dual Parallel Trouble, Maburaho, Girls Bravo, Happy Lesson, Suzuka, Ai Yori Aoshi, Eden of the East, DearS, Hand Maid May, .Hack// ROOTS, .Hack// Legend of the Twilight Bracelet, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Ghost in the Shell (Movie), A Wind Named Amnesia, Ah! My Goddess, Astro Boy, Basilisk, Bastard, Blood the Last Vampire, Blue Seed, Bakaratsu Hunters, Bubblegum Crisis, Code Geass, D.N. Angel, Dragonaut the Resonance, My Hime, Geneshaft, Golden Boy, Ichigo100%, Ikkitousen, Inuyasha, Love Hina, Majikano, Martian Succesor Nadesico, Marmalade Boy, Noir,
  16. Goku, superman always wins in his world because he's an alien, well so is goku, and everything superman does goku has done as a child (except the x-ray vision), being impervious to bullets, shooting beams, superhuman strength. Also, someone mentioned goku not haveing a kryptonite equivalent, you forget his tail. In the dragon ball series goku trained his tail to be stronger because he would always lose his strength when someone pulled it, that's also how he almost defeated his brother when his son was kidnapped, but goku had a kryptonite equivalent, but superman never tried to get stronger, he never worked on his weakness, his power is equal where goku started, but goku would whip him hands down
  17. what do you mean by overpowered? If you just mean powerful than almost any action anime will do, but if you are referring to a difference in power between the character and their opponent I have to disagree with Goku, while Goku is constantly showing up overpowered in DBZ (cant argue with the original dragon ball), he almost immediately meets a villain that makes him seem weak by comparison, goes off and trains, comes back 10 times more powerful than his opponent, rinse and repeat, so he is only overpowered about half the time and for the rest he is pathetically weak, the show could never find middle ground. On the other hand, Alucard from hesling never meets an opponent close to him in power until the very end, you are never once left with the feeling that he is in any danger or might loose, though you often get the impression that he screws around with his opponent (and before anyone mentions Goku, I'm not saying Goku doesn't either, I'm well aware that he hid his true power quite often for the sake of dramatics), but only the final villain was on his level, no training, no enhancements, no increases to power though he receives a new gun once its really more like a new toy than a needed tool. As for Lucy from Elfen Lied I would also have to dissagree, while she was more powerful than mere humans she was only slightly more powerful than most diclonis, and it was suggested that other diclonis were more powerful than here caged away, Lucy was frightening more so because of her sociopathic impulses and killer instincts than for her power, but these are my opinions and the bar at which I measure overpowered may very well be different from everyone else, it all comes down to perspective in the end
  18. 1. Ruroni Kenshin 2. Neon Genisis Evangelion 3. Ranma 1/2 4. Tenchi Muyo 5. Slayers I consider these the basics and an excellent place to start if your new to anime, they don't cover every genre but it will help you identify your tastes in the world of anime, from there take your favorites and search for anime like them which will lead you to every anime related to their type
  19. this may or may not be helpful as I don't know any anime based on alice and wonderland, but if you read I would highly recommend neverwhere by neil gaiman, it is not based on alice in wonderland but has a lot in common and is a very good read. If you read books you won't regret picking up this one
  20. I was not very impressed with it at first glance but I finally gave it a chance and its worth watching, but in my opinion the second season was most disappointing. The first season was very well done and very intriguing, the concept of using a villainous hero was quite apealing as was his conniving manipulative character. However the second season was just sloppy, too many things were just convenient, they replaced quality story for flash and flair and instead of keeping with the original formula they tried a little to hard and focused way to much on the mecha action and the plot greatly suffered, by itself it wasn't horrible but placing it next to the first season is like eating a doughnut after creme brulee, its not that the doughnut is terrible its just the difference in quality
  21. thats a pretty eclectic collection, I also prefer dubs and it looks like we have similar tastes, my personal favorite is School Rumble as it has a lot of good comedy, also if reverse harem doesn't scare you away Ouran High School Host Club is also a great comedy series, I would also second Fruits Basket, The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Baccano (realy good story telling, a bit like pulp fiction in putting it together so it will confuse at first), and I just finished Eden of the East and would recommend that as well
  22. while it is not a true horror series, judging by your request and the age of your brother I would highly recommend xxxHolic, it is not a true horror series but it has a lot of horror and supernatural themes to it, it deals heavily in the supernatural realm but it also has a reasonable amount of humor and while things heat up from time to time it keeps things fairly light hearted, however if you want something a little more hard core Hell Girl and Vampire Princess Miyu will also work quite well
  23. judging by your preferences I would say you primarily prefer action, as such I cannot recommend ruroni kenshin enough, it is one of the best action anime's of all time, however for newer action series there is samurai champloo which has a bit of a hip hop slant to it but has excelent comedy and good action, Fate/Stay Night is also probably right up your alley as well as it deals primarily with martial arts mixed with fantasy and a hint of comedy, and if you are interested in getting into action that is a bit more hard core and adult Elfen Lied is one of the best out there but has very large quantity's of blood and gore a decent amount of nudity, and mature themes, it is not an ecchi series (i.e. girls doing raunchi things to help sales) though there are a couple failed atempts at perverse humor in the first couple episodes but the story is amazing and is a watch you won't regret.
  24. I have not seen air but Kanon is a lot like clannad, there is a remastered version dated 2006 which is much easier to find than the original. It is a bit slow and has a very nostalgic feel to it, I highly recommend it
