  1. Kaze No Stigma centers around an air mage, lots of fight scenes, a little romance and drama, and 90% of the action is magic based. Based in modern times.

Slayers is an old school one, but its a fantasy anime with lots of comedy if you don't mind older art, main character is a mage.

Magikano, Maburaho, Shuffle, Demon King Daimao (more action than the first two), and Negima (only watched the original series, couldn't make it past the first episode of the re-make) are all harem animes with varying degrees of action and all based around magic, also based in modern times.

Witch Hunter Robin is another action anime based on modern times that focus's on magic quite a bit, but not as flashy as most of my suggestions.

The Twelve Kingdoms is a good fantasy adventure, the main character is from modern times but is transported into a more ancient civilization, more storyline than anything else, but a descent amount of action and a decent amount of magic.

Record of Lodoss war is a very old school and very dry D&D-like anime, plenty of magic and fantasy, and a good bit of action, the last several episodes were cut short in the english version so you have to go dub if you want the whole thing, followed by Crystania

.//Hack series varies in temperament a lot between series, but they all are based in a fantasy video game and as such have a good amount of magic elements.

Most anime have some degree of fantasy and magic however large or small, without repeating anything thats been mentioned, like fate/stay night etc. these are the ones most centered around magic, in particular for combat, that I can think of.

EDIT: this got posted twice for some reason and I don't know how to delete this, if someone can do that, thanks.

  3. if you want something very deep and complex, the Wheel of Time series (starts with The Eye of the World) by Robert Jordan is as good as it gets, unfortunately he died before ending it, but the books are about 800 pages in length so for 10 books it'll last you a while.

If you want a lot of action with decent plot, but mostly action, the Drizz't Do Urden books by R.A. Salvatore are pretty decent.

If you want good all around fantasy then the Obsidian trilogy by Mercades Lacky (excellent author, does a few other series, leans towards machiavelian villains and uses a lot of grey areas) and James Mallory is very good, also the Farseer Chronicles by Robin Hobb (starts with Assassins Apprentice) is an excellent read, a bit more politics than action and the fantasy elements are very subtle and toned down, also the Green Rider series by Kristen Britain is a good read, starts with Green Rider so its easy to find, but its not finished.

If you want to laugh your ass off then the disc world books by Terry Pratchette are excellent, and you can start just about anywhere in the series, they tend to be a short read.

The Anita Blake Vampire hunter series by Laura K. Hamilton is good but goes down hill after book 4, about sociopathic vampires, lots of blood, sadism, and just F'd up characters.... until it becomes a cheesy porno around book 9 if memory serves.

The best fantasy books in my opinion are by Neil Gaiman, Stardust I think is the best and pay no mind to the movie as it got just about everything wrong, the first 3 times I read the book I did so in one sitting and its not exactly short, it starts slow but its hard to put down after ch. 4. Neverwhere is the next big one and its more on the darker side.

I can recommend more, but I think that's the best of what I have to offer

  4. Baccano would be my first recommendation, its kinda like pulp fiction in the sense that it jumps around a lot, and it does a good job of giving just enough info to make you wander whats really going on.

Also, if you want a bit of mystery, I also recommend xxxHolic, it deals primarily in the occult and unseen world of magic and mystery, it has a decent amount of suspense and thriller aspects with a good deal of comedy, the manga was written by the same group and in conjunction with Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles (1st seasons pretty good, second season is ok, haven't finished it) and card captor sakura (xxxHolic is nothing like card captor sakura), though all 3 are very different series, there is a light conection between em.

Lastly, Death Note, probably my best suggestion but I thought of it last. The plot of someone picking up a notebook that allows them to kill people might not seem that interesting, but it is filled with all kinds of plot twists to keep you guessing and a lot of suspense between the main character and his rival (for lack of a better term) L, a detective and eccentric genius of sorts who takes the most interesting and dangerous routes to discover the identity of the main character and bring him to justice. Think of watching a suspense thriller where the villainous murderer is also the protagonist.

  5. I'm looking for lesser known titles, unique is preferable. I like comedy best, but as long as its good, interesting, or unique I'll bite. Examples of the above would be things like baccano (though not exactly lesser known), revolutionary girl utena (very psycadelic), xxxHolic (different and unique), or spice and wolf (not very well known, but good story if a bit dry). I don't discriminate on genres, though I have my preferences, any ideas would be most welcome, and thank you for input in advance.

  6. I like the 12-24 episode short series, even if they have a second or third season, as they tend to be, in my opinion, more unique and contain more depth. When I think of long anime I think of dragon ball/DBZ, bleach, pokemon, etc. and they have their place, I watch em, but compared to things like xxxholic, elfen lied, fruits basket, baccano etc. I find them sorely lacking, its like comparing a normal tv sitcom with a hollywood production, they are very different and are approached differently. Both have their place, but in most cases the hollywood films have better quality per hour watched than a tv series. With that said, I also don't think you can tell much of a story in only an hour or two, while at the same time, after watching dbz I have to ask "how much of the series was nothing more then two macho dudes screaming while their muscles bulged to ridiculous proportions, personally I wish they would stop screaming and just hit each other already, as I said, I liked dbz but in comparison to, oh say, samurai champloo I find it lacking.

  7. My favorite anime had its 3rd season cancelled and ended the second season on a major cliff hanger, School Rumble, and to this day it pisses the hell out of me...

Also, Fruits Basket felt like it ended halfway, like they were planing on continuing but didn't, and with the few allusions to breaking the soma family curse I think a second season should be made that involves that

Tenjou Tenge, I laugh every time I think about this series, it has so many random plot directions that I really don't think the writer knew where he was going to take it but just kind of bs'd his way through the plot making shit up as he went, but all the same it does have a certain charm and I wouldn't mind seeing another season if it finishes the series.

A lot of people mention elfen lied but I disagree, I haven't read the manga, but I don't doubt that the manga had more story left, however the way they ended the anime to me felt right with all the major issues resolved or revealed, and the hint that Lucy was still alive, but not actually showing her allways left me with a nice mixed feeling of "run, she's going to kill you all" and "yay, shes still alive", to me that just felt right, though I know most ppl disagree with that.

I would also like to add xxxHolic to my list, its not that it didn't end well, but I just really liked the series and would like to see more, I would especially like to see what happens in watanuki's love life, personally I hope he gets over himawari and takes an interest in the mysterious and shy mountain spirit (cant think of her name atm)

Another great series that doesn't need another season but would be kick ass if they did is Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, it kicked ass and another season would just kick more ass

  8. Harima from school rumble was mentioned, and I have to say he reminds me of myself in high school soo much its scary.

Who I would like to be is Tenchi Muyo, well not quite immortal will most likely live hundreds of years and stay young for most of it, a bunch of hot babes wanting to bone me (though my great aunt would be a bit creepy and gross to say the least, but Ayeka is hot so I can live with it), can fight fairly well, powerful, and a nice peaceful and tranquil life with few major concerns or troubles for the most part suites me fine.

  9. Tenchi Muyo, part of why I have a penchant for harem anime's ^_^ but I felt dirty the few times they would show nudity and when I looked for other titles I would try to find shows that did not have nudity, I gave up on that eventually and am glad I did so as I would have missed a lot of good shows and good comedy as a result.

  10. Off the top of my head I'd have to go with naruto for all his "believe it" crap in the english dub, most annoying repeat line, aside from that he just seems like an annoying little kid with a big mouth and no sense, maybe they managed to make that charming in the japanese version (like comparing the miaka in fushigi yuugi or sakura in card captor sakura, japanese did them justice while the english sucked in my opinion), I'm a fan of dub myself. Naruto had potential, but I got so annoyed with him early on that I couldn't watch anymore.

As for light from death note, he's the kind of character you love to hate, but for what he was and was supposed to be I think they did an excellent job, he was the main character and the main villain which is most intriguing, I loved it, kind of like elfen lied, I loved lucy but she also scared the hell out of me which is as it should be. But I think death note went downhill fast after L died, personally I don't think anyone else should have brought light to justice, it just didn't feel right, and those 2 kids together weren't a tenth as epic as L, though it was pretty big shoes to fill and in their own right they were cool enough, but still.

  11. Without any knowledge of your preferences, this is actually a difficult question, but to cover all the bases....

For action, Ruroni Kenshin, Elfen Lied, Basalisk

For comedy geared towards guys, Tenchi Muyo, Girls Bravo, Love Hina

For comedy geared towards girls, Fruits basket, Ouran High School Host Club, Fushigi Yugi

For general comedy, School Rumble, Great Teacher Onizuka, The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumia

For drama and splice of life, Suzuka, Honey and Clover, Welcome to the NHK

For mecha, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Code Geass, Martian Successor Nadesico

For something different, Beck, xxxHolic, Eden of the East

For adventure and fantasy, Slayers, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles

For warm and nostalgic, Kanon, Clannad, Air

For Magical Girl, Full Moon Wo Sagashite, Kamakaze Kaitou Jeanne (sub only), Revolutionary Girl Utena

For mainstream action, Dragonball/DBZ, Bleach, Naruto

And some general recommendations would be, Baccano, Ah! My Goddess, Spice and Wolf

If you cant find something you like in that I will shoot myself for dishonor ^_^

  12. there's a lot of awesome anime out there and I could give a title for most genre's and sub genres, but personally I think the best all around anime from front to finish was kenshin, my personal favorite on the other hand is school rumble. Kenshin is just epic, and while cowboy bebop, elfen lied, and a few others are definitely up there in terms of story, content, concept, and implementation I think kenshin is the best all around in my opinion

  13. The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, it would never work in a movie because too much of the books revolve around the thoughts and perceptions of the person who's perspective your reading from at the time, and so many things would be difficult but not impossible visually, but in an anime it could work very well, but only if they stick to the books and don't add/change or take anything away and put a lot of effort into staying true to the books like they did in the first 2 harry potter movies, but that is unlikely

The Farseer Chronicles, The Liveship Traders, The Tawny Man series by Robbin Hobb, all 3 trilogies are part of the same story, though the liveship traders is a bit removed, excelent stories and they would work excellently as anime, my only concern would be the lack of understanding of european medevil culture that I've seen in some anime, but it is a very small concern

The Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory, awesome stories and I think anime would have a much better chance of expressing the rich culture of the elves than a live action movie, and many other things would also mesh well as an anime

The Drizzt DoUrden books by R.A. Salvatore, these would work well as live action movies or anime, not the deepest books I've read (unless you count the journal entries at the beginning of some chapters), but lots of action, not a boring moment, and not too much dialog.

Stardust by Niel Gaimen, I was seriously pissed when they butchered my favorite book when they turned it into a movie, best book I've ever read and they had to change/add and leave out a butt load of details and got everything wrong, it was completely unnecessary. Would work well as a movie or short anime, but only if they stay true to the book or it is only viewed by people who never read the book....

Acorna series by Anne Mcaffry and various other writers, I think the best part of the book series was that anne mcaffry didn't write them alone as I find her writing style to be very dry, however the acorna series would work well as movies or books, but I dread it being turned into movies, I think an anime would do a lot of justice to Acorna and flesh out her character in a cute appealing way that I just can't see in a live action film, but I could definitely see Acorna as a cute and awesome anime chick if done right

of the books I've read, those are definately my top candidates, I also think anime could do justice to the life of King David from the Bible, especially if they don't do anything that contradicts scripture aside from the contradictions already there (I'm referring to one set of histories saying God caused him to do something and another set of histories saying it was the devil, first mention of the devil in scripture in canonical order but not in historical order as Job is quite probably the oldest texts in scripture and is believed to have occurred before mosses, though it is uncertain if it was meant to be a story for teaching or a record of actual events (long explanation, hopefully will minimize possibility of hate mail)) If they show the rise and fall of saul and a bit of Davids childhood, it would make a great beginning, and there are many details missing in Davids military career which would leave plenty of room for embellishment if done properly, though many christians would object I myself would not be offended as long as nothing is contradicted, plenty of action, and plot twists to make a good all-around story with bits of comedy, drama, and romance.

  14. Shampoo from Ranma 1/2, I hated her at first, she seemed stupid and mindlessly infatuated with ranma, I thought she had no dignity or self respect until I saw the episode where she tricks ranma into a date, completely changed my opinion of her and now she's one of my favorites.

Rei from Evangelion, her quiet confident composure, her lack of common sense and that she was very strange and different always made her attractive to me, and I got a thing for white hair ^_^

Eri from school rumble, her entire love/hate relationship with harima was very amusing, and I liked her contrasting character traits of being an arrogant stuck up prissy snob, but also being sweet and caring at times as well, a bit caught between worlds, and I just like her for a reason I don't understand myself

Kurumi from Steel Angel Kurumi, she was soo annoying, but she managed to do it in a way that was endearing, and her ditsy brainlessness sometimes made for some very cool moments, like the very last few lines, "Oh, master, I was already extremely happy before I ever saw some sill little star" or something to that effect

Chi from Chobits, Watching that series always makes me feel dirty, but chi is soo cute, there's no way around that

Arumi Kanzaki from Great Teacher Onizuka I gotta thing for blonds, and then there is her whole devil may care attitude, the fact that she's dangerous and volatile, her sense of humor, the fact that she burns, blows up, or destroys things without giving a shit, she was pure awesome and totally hot, and if she were real I'd be half afraid and half intrigued about dating her which would just be exciting

Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess, no way I can't mention her, they set out to make the perfect and ideal woman and did a damn good job

Suzumia from the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia, she was eccentric and interesting, completely lacking common sense and disdaining social decorum, definitely on my "wish I could date a chick like that" list

Yuko from xxxHolic, mysterious and eccentric, not to mention totally hot on top of a good sense of humor and being plastered 3/4's of the time, can't really ask for more than that

and thats all I can think of off the top of my head

  15. This is a lesser known magical girl anime and one of the few that doesn't make me gag. It's about a little girl who dreams of becoming a professional singer but is terminally with an unmentioned disease that can be irritated by overtaxing her voice, and her grandmother that she lives with is adamantly against singing. One day she is visited by the pediatric division of grim reapers and through a series of events they grant her wish to be a singer before she dies by granting her the ability to change form into an adult without her illness, and its all downhill from there. It was a good series and I'd like to finish it

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but I've been trying to find a place to buy or download it in english dub with no success. It's been several years since I watched a few episodes streamed over the internet and they hadn't finished dubbing it at the time. Right now I'm just hoping that it wasn't dropped halfway through the dub or something like that, but if anyone knows a place to find it please let me know.
