  1. I went through your revised list, and you could skip the thermal paste and save the $8 if you want. The picture for the heatsink you added shows a tube of thermal paste with the actual heatsink. I can't tell what brand it is, but I'm guessing it's Cooler Master's own brand. There should be enough in the tube to reapply the paste if any mistakes happen to occur during the initial installation. This is why I prefer to have an actual tube handy when I assemble a PC. Since the heatsink comes with it's own tube of paste, an extra tube will only be redundant and unnecessary. Unless of course you specifically want the arctic silver, then it's totally your decision whether or not to purchase it. I think I'd probably agree more with your husband on the hdd issue. You could definitely save money using the external drive you already have, but if that drive happens to fail. You not only lose your files on that drive, but also your backup. I personally have a special drive set aside for backups of my OS. I install the OS and programs I want, update them, and then use parted magic to create a backup of the entire hdd. I store this on that special drive so there is little chance of the image being corrupted or the drive failing from old age. You may also want to keep an eye on the rebates when you get ready to purchase these parts. You might be able to time it just right so you can use your rebates to buy an extra stick of ram, or at least get real close.
  2. I like the changes you've made so far to the Brave skin, it's definitely going in the right direction. I did notice some things I wanted to point out though. The banner still shows the old one until the new one is loaded over the top of it, is this something that can be fixed? I've also noticed that people with long signatures seem to brake the forum borders when the browser is in a smaller window. This doesn't seem to happen with the ip.board skin, but like I mentioned in my last post, it is very white. I have a picture of the issue with the signatures below, but the banner issue is rather hard to catch with an image. I used my awesome windows paint skills to place an orange arrow near what I'm referring to, and I'm displaying the issue in both dragon and firefox.
  3. Do you have any intention of overclocking this PC? The B75 chipset is more of a business oriented mobo and will most likely not overclock very well, if at all. It's suppose to have added security features like SBA (Small Business Advantage) that you may not need. I think the idea of SBA sounds pretty interesting but it looks like it requires Windows OS, which I'm not to thrilled about. I found this link on Toms that explains SBA. I also noticed a link in the comments that referred to this article, but it seems kind of bogus to me. Toms didn't seem to have felt any need to respond to it either, and I haven't been able to find anything else that talks about this. Thought I'd go ahead and mention it since you seem to be considering the B75 now. Personally, I think the name of the site explains the whole article rather well, but I haven't found anything that actually disproves it yet. Would be really nice if SBA was actually OS independent, but I guess that is to much to ask for.
  4. Personally, I would stay away from that big ass Noctua heatsink. Not that it isn't a really good heatsink, it just happens to be a total brick. You could get similar, if not better, cooling performance from a sealed liquid cooling unit. It would also take up a lot less space on your mobo. I tried really hard to find a way to allow myself to recommend a liquid cooler, but I really couldn't come up with anything that would justify the added expense. The reason why I wanted to is because it would allow you to overclock your cpu more than the one you currently have selected. It would also allow you to cool the cpu with the cooler air from outside the case, rather than using the already warm air inside it. Since the case you picked out can support to big fans at the top of the case. You could set it up so all the hot air gets pushed out through the top. This would require you to not only pay more for the water block, but also pay for the two fans for the top of the case. There just isn't any way to justify spending the extra amount of money if your not going to overclock. I am fairly confident that the cpu you selected will come with a heatsink. It's listed as retail, which means it will come in a box like the one pictured. That box is too big to carry one little processor by itself, so there will be a heatsink in there. It will probably be a total piece of crap, but it will be there. You're able to buy cpus without the heatsink, but if they're marketed properly they will be listed as oem. It could also be listed as refurbished, but I usually stay away from refurbished products. I would also recommend the thermal paste, and always will, it's just good insurance to have it around.
  5. Since you want this to last, I would buy the fastest i7 you're willing to pay for. You'll probably also want a mobo with the z77 chipset and an after market heatsink if you're going to OC. You don't really "need" an ssd, and you can always add one later, so I'd focus on getting the best processor, mobo, and ram you can afford.
  6. I'm just gonna say it, I don't like the brave skin, and the ip.board skin is too white. Will we be getting different skin options at some point? The brave skin doesn't look like it belongs on an anime forum and it bunches together in a small window. I don't mind the layout of ip.board, I just wish it had a little darker color palette. Is there a version of ip.board in black or a dark grey? I know my opinion has the value of a squirrel fart, but I figured there might be one or two other members thinking this.
  7. Steam is coming to linux, you can already download the open beta. I think Valve is to invested in the porting to back out now. While the decision to choose Ubuntu as their launch pad will likely bite them in the ass, steam linux will happen. I also know of at least two separate projects that are trying to bring the power of avisynth to the linux platform. I will say that I don't believe linux will replace windows in the lifetime of the computer she is building. Linux has way too much bs right now to actually be considered a viable replacement to Windows for everyone. As far as the op, from what I see on the revised list you should be fine. I'm not seeing a rom drive though, are you using one from another pc?
  8. Are any other disk being recognized on you computer? Maybe your rom drive is bad. You could also try using a live usb installer. Ubuntu should have iso images specifically for usb drives on their site some where. Edit: if the disk works fine on your labtop then it's not corrupted.
  9. Did you download the md5 checksum file with your iso? Your iso could be corrupted. Found this guide on ubuntu's site. You can also check out distrowatch if you want to see a list of other linux distros.
  10. How is the cd not working? Is it failing to boot during system start up? Probably another stupid question, but did you tell the bios to boot from the cd? Personally I think there are better linux distros than ubuntu, but it would probably be one of the easiest for beginners. I would also like to inform you that the open source os community suffers from some serious elitism. Calling a linux distro unix on their forums will likely get you attacked. Even referring to BSD as unix could get you crapped on. A good linux forum that I really like is the crunchbang (#!) forum. They do a much better job at tolerating noobs than pretty much any other linux forum I've come across. It could be a good place to ask questions when you get linux up and running.
  11. Have you tried a usb version? What unix are you trying to install?
  12. I think we’re talking about two completely different versions of the NRA. You’re referring to the one you read about in the brochures they pass out, and I’m referring to the lobbying heavy weight that seems to strike fear into the hearts of politicians. Most people in the NRA are exactly like you mentioned. They’re probably ok with the idea of greater restrictions on guns if it keeps children safer. The lobbying side however, won’t stand for anything that lengthens or hinders the ability of pretty much anyone to get a gun. With a battle plan like that, I don’t see how they can be considered as “for” gun safety. There should also be a law that requires any gun owner with kids to keep the guns unloaded and locked up. Failure to comply should bring either jail time or have the children removed do to an unsafe living environment. Which action is taken against them should come down to how the authorities are informed of the discretion and whether or not anyone was injured. I also think unstable people need cheaper and easier access to the treatments they need. Doctors that do more than just dope patients up on meds could also go a long way. This is what all these people who keep mentioning Britain or Japan never bring up. While they do have tighter gun laws, they also do a hell of a lot better job at treating their sick. In this country the sick are pretty much ignored unless they have money, and I’m still not entirely convinced that ObamaCare will change this. I personally don’t see why guns can’t be licensed in a similar way to motor vehicles. Require people to take a gun safety class before they can even apply to purchase a gun. Different classes of guns could require a different license and a greater amount of training. Have the hunting class be the lowest/easiest license, and require little more than a weekend or two of training. Handguns could be another class which would require even more training. It could also require some kind of proof that a doctor has deemed you stable enough for gun ownership. I think a system like this would do a lot more to stop gun violence than taking away one class of guns. I also think the whole idea of just trying to limit the death toll of the next mass shooting is utterly stupid. Would you as a parent really feel any better knowing that your child only died with four other students instead of fifteen?
  13. I'd try to watch a few web videos or something before you try building yours. Stuff like installing the cpu/heatsink can get tricky at times, and they damage easy. I'd also try rebuilding an older PC you don't need anymore before you start playing with brand new hardware. It won't hurt as much if you get it wrong.
  14. It goes on the processor to fill any gaps that could be between it and the heatsink. It's used to help cut down on heat. Edit: Your heatsink could come with it already applied, but it's still a good idea to have some handy.
  15. I would have to agree with JohnFlower on the Core i5 issue, but the Core i3 should be enough if you can't afford the i5. However, I would like to recommend a different mobo. The intel mobo you currently have picked out doesn't really match the ram and gpu listed above. I'd also recommend getting some of the Arctic Sliver that inuyasha211 mentioned above. The only other suggestion I might make is a cheaper case, but I have no real reason for recommending it other than it being cheaper. p.s. I used newegg links because the info amazon offers is pretty weak.
  16. I'm sure this is an utterly stupid question, but what exactly is Goomba Land (or Pumpkin Goombas) referring to. I'm guessing from the other post it has to do with linux, but is it your own saying or a more general one I have missed. I don't use or even like ubuntu, so I'm only asking for my own curiosity. Also, if your looking for Fraps you can find it in the Premium section since you have access. According to the posts it's suppose to be the current version, but I didn't test the link.
  17. You may be able to use the vista driver, some are compatible with both.
  18. I think both sides of this debate are stupid, especially with this latest disaster. Gun haters think that removing all guns will stop crazy people from causing pointless deaths. Al-Qaeda killed 3000+ Americans with a couple of razor blades. How may died in the Oklahoma City bombing? How many did the Unabomber kill or injure? Crazy mother fuckers gonna do what crazy mother fuckers do. Taking their guns away will only give them more of a reason to do it. Gun lovers think teachers can be trusted to protect our kids with the guns they'd carry. American teachers have been know to abuse, rape, kidnap, and kill their students. Hell, just recently one was feeding his students semen on a spoon. You want these motherfuckers carrying weapons around YOUR kids, REALLY! The NRA pisses me off because they think gun rights means zero gun responsibility. They SHOULD be against anyone having a gun who is to stupid or lazy to learn how to operate and/or care for a firearm. The problem is that the NRA really isn't about the joy of gun ownership. It's about the joy of profiting from selling guns to stupid unworthy Americans. People who are just as likely to shoot themselves in face, as the person down the street. I'm also pissed off by so called professional journalist like Piers Morgan, who think the news is suppose to be about their dumb ass opinion rather than something more important like facts. They actually believe that getting rid of AR-15s and extended clips will make a difference. As if the crazies will just decide that mass murder is to hard now and give up. Al-Qaeda hasn't given up, what makes them think crazy people would. How much have Americans had to give up to be "SAFE" from terrorism. Are we going to have to give up all that in our everyday lives too. What happens when the crazies decide to start tossing molotov cocktails around. Will we have to give up glass and flammable liquids. We are surrounded by things that can kill people in mass every single day, and we will never be able to get rid of all of it. The trick is making sure the people that would want to, are never in a position where they can. So instead of removing all the dangerous objects in the world, maybe we should think about doing something with the people instead.
  19. Is it getting through the bios part of the boot up? Did you change the boot order in the bios before you tried to boot into the boot disk? Do you know if the labtop was dropped recently? It kind of sounds like windows is trying to check the file system but is unable to complete the process. You may have a damaged hard drive.
  20. Holly crap, it must be tough being a black guy in a zombie apocalypse. There must be some unwritten rule that only one black guy is allowed in the group at any given time. He didn't even last long enough for me to learn his name, and I was starting to like him. Would of preferred it if the pedo had been taken out instead. I don't much care for that character. I'm also going to be super pissed if they kill Daryl off. I'm really starting to like his character and the way he meshes with the group. I know that Tyreese is suppose to be an important character in the comic, but I think Daryl has become to important to kill off at this point in time.
  21. Welcome back Mae, glad to see your finally back. How many countries did you visit? Did you make it to the US?
  22. I’m not trying to say there wasn't already some deep seated hatred for Obama within the Republican Party. I’m just trying to say he was far from innocent. I don’t see where he had to cross any Republican red tape during his first two years either. Democrats held both the Senate and the House during those first two years, so they didn't need Republicans for anything. According to some very angry Republicans during the midterm elections, Obama made them well aware of that fact. That’s where my two year victory lap comes from. Obama knew there was deep sentiment towards him coming from the Republicans, but he did nothing to try and bridge that gap. Instead he egged them on by leaving them out of everything he could, and reminding them they lost the ’08 election every chance he got. He even insulted Paul Ryan during a ’11 speech while he was setting in the front row. Then he tried to play it off like he didn't know Ryan was going to be there. Let’s not forget the all important Beer Summit either. Obama felt it important to be seen on camera while mediating some pointless dispute between an angry well off black man and a white police officer of questionable intelligence. While this is taking place, black youths die around the country every day to black on black violence. Couldn't he have taken some time out of his busy schedule to have a weed summit too? Surely he could have found the time to squash that little dispute as well. I find his fight to get ObamaCare passed utterly laughable as well. The only people fighting over that were Democrats arguing for their fare share of the earmarks. Not a single Republican voted for that bill. This was supposedly the first time in history a billed passed with only single party support. There were also the back room deals made with the lobbyist to assure the companies involved would still be allowed to make off like bandits once the law took effect. While they were arguing over ObamaCare the economy was tanking, millions were losing their jobs, and a lot of other important bills were left to the sidelines. Democrats basically wasted two years arguing over a bill they all knew they were going to pass in the end. I fail to see how Obama really has the right to complain about the GOP not working with him, when he couldn't even get his own party to. I will admit that I’m incredibly bias towards Obama solely on that fact that he is a Chicago politician. I have a deep seated hatred of any politician hailing from that city. Every trait I hate about them, Obama seems to have in spades. IMO, he really only cares about how history will remember him. What he wants more than anything is to be remembered as the black Abraham Lincoln. I really do hope all the things Obama promised in ’08 manage to get accomplished in his final term. I just highly doubt they'll come about because Obama truly cares about poor blacks, latinos, or the gay community. He had the opportunity to help all of those groups from ’09-’10, but he was too busy trying to accomplish what Bill Clinton couldn't. I do agree with you that Hillary would have been a much better choice. Unfortunately, she never stood a chance against the manufactured myth of a Barrack Obama Presidency. On an entirely different note from the anti-Obama rant above. I'm loving how Romney is now crying about how the 47%, he said he wasn't going to worry about, didn't vote for him.
  23. I don't see how the Republican Party stays a viable political option past the middle of this century. Their unwillingness to except the fact that elections can't be won solely on the support of white voters, is only rivaled by their unwillingness to except evolution as factual science. I'm beside myself just trying to figure out how they can honestly believe we are dumb enough to fall for, "see me after the election". I'm actually beginning to wonder if a Harvard degree is even worth the paper it's printed on. There is so much stupidity and hate within the Republican party that some of their candidates are actually running as Democrats, just to escape the toxicity of their party. I will be highly impressed if Republican isn't a dirty word 20 years from now. What pisses my off the most, is that I was hoping they would be the party to save us from that arrogant prick Obama. I will gladly admit that the Republicans did everything they could during the last two years to keep Obama from a second term. I also can't deny that Obama took a two year victory lap while giving Republicans the double bird after he was elected. Obama did as much to earn Republican hate during his first two years, as the Republicans were willing to shower him with during the last two. With all that said, I won't miss the Republican Party after they've faded to near nothingness. Not because a hate their stance on nearly everything, which I do, but because they actually managed to make me willingly vote for Barrack Obama. Something I swore I'd never do.
  24. NP, glad you found something that works. FTR, the batch file AoD was talking about would also work for you. It would just be a list of command line operations to preform one after the other. The problem is you'll have to learn the command line syntax for mp4box before you'd be able to make one. The gui your using now is just a slightly prettier way of doing it.
  25. You can have soft subs inside of mp4, but I believe they have to be ttxt. I think mp4box will take, and convert, srt subtitles. The only problem is you'll lose most, if not all, of your formatting. That's because srt doesn't support karaoke, or any of the other advanced features .ass offers. What you end up with will hopefully look no worse than the subtitles on a DVD. This is probably why most people just burn them in instead. I don't know if fapple supports soft subs, so they may not work on your isuck device. Could be another reason why people choose to burn them in.
