  1. The series in question has a big influence on this question for me. Sometimes the Japanese audio seems more appropriate, or sometimes some of the meaning or humour is lost in a dub (though that's moot if the subs are poor or inaccurate). Then there are occasions where the dub conveys the meaning of the text differently, or better, than the original. Obviously, cultural difference in jokes as well. And sometimes, dub VAs seem to make the characters their own, though that's subjective.

There's a large degree of subjectivity and relativity with this kind of question, so I don't want to commit to subs, dubs, or "both".

I definitely agree with the viewpoint that quality is more important than language. Some dubs are completely unwatchable compared to raws because of terrible grating voice work or a complete mangling of the original materials.... and the opposite sometimes is also be true.

  2. First game I ever played was Final Fantasy IV. (Only it was called II back in those days.) My sister taught me the basic rules of the game so she could bounce ideas off me as to why she couldn't get past the first half of the game.

Then I showed her how simple it would be if she manipulated the rulesets. Little things like bouncing spells off your own Reflect to get past an enemy's, or using cure spells to kill zombies faster. She wasn't amused, not least of all because I was 6 and she was 14, but I think she was just miffed because it was all so obvious and she still didn't get it.

First game I personally owned, is a tie between Crash Bandicoot and Ridge Racer.

First PC game was Unreal. Probably fitting that it's the game which got me into shooters and PC gaming in general, since it pioneered some of the concepts that can make or break a game for me.

  3. Honestly, I think you should be glad to be losing interest in anime at this point. Had a similar experience personally with games during college, but four years later I've passed all my courses with admirable grades, have a respectable income and caught up on all the games I missed already.

This is what I told myself, if it helps: [games/anime/comics/movies/TV/novels] are like a song. Nobody likes listening to ten seconds of a song, and then waiting a week for the next ten seconds. That just kills the song entirely.

Cutting back entirely might be the best thing, because you won't be left wanting to know the rest of the story, et cetera.

It's a tough gauntlet to run, but you're not griping about anime making school impossible and so it's clear that you're doing just fine. :P

  4. One time I'd just finished a major web design project one day, felt tired, and wanted to cool off. Started clicking around Youtube, found the first episode of Suzumiya Haruhi, and watched. It was the wittiest thing I'd seen in a while.

At that point I realised not all anime were like the shōnen fighting ones I'd watched (and grew out of) as a teen, and there were a lot of clever ones out there to go and find.

Since then, just cruised from one series to the next when there's no work to do, don't feel like gaming, and have a couple of free hours to sink into a marathon.
