Status Updates posted by dangerousvhs

  1. If anyone on this forum wants my email address, I suggest PMing me for it soon. Otherwise you might be stuck having to contact me on Discord or Mastodon.

  2. Take my advice, don't ask me (or anyone) for cartoons or whatever in a status update.

  3. Well everyone, here we are. What can I even say that isn't really obvious, or for that matter won't possibly get me in trouble? Well, I'll try and say this at least, you probably won't see me around much here anymore, so my suggestion is that if you want to keep in touch with me for discussing completely legal matters, here's some alternate ways to contact me:

    Discord: dangerousvhs#1431

    Mastodon/Pleroma: @dangerousvhs@mastodon.technology

    Email: PM for it

Let me know if there's anywhere else you'd like to contact me, I'll see what I can do.

idk but I suggest not continuing this conversation here.

  4. At this point, the test subject...was dead. {Gasp from the audience}

  5. Hollywood Suite is apparently on free preview again. If you see a rare movie on there you want, know that they don't edit movies for time like AMC, though some of the movies (mostly old Canadian ones) are presented in upscaled SD. (I guess HD prints were too hard to get for some films.)

(Related: I hope DHX Media has HD transfers or film prints somewhere of the movies Cinar made back when they were a film production company.)

Santa's Apprentice is reairing for the first time on TQ. I know all the French episodes are on YouTube. Would be cool though.

@dangerousvhs I set both of them to record as a series, but how many episodes do you need of each.

Just one of Zoboomafoo. Either they didn't do anything to the show in which case it's not that interesting, or it's cropped to 16:9, in which case I won't likely want to see too much of it. You don't have to do Santa at all but if you're gonna might as well do as much as you can. Thank you!

  6. So people are apparently making fake accounts of me now. Not sure how to feel about that. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnA0mAFb0xY5lZOdpAni6DQ

  7. Neat bug I found: plugging in or unplugging a USB device while capturing video causes dropped frames.

  9. Family Jr. is airing new episodes of Daniel Tiger's Neighbourhood on Mondays, seemingly ahead of PBS, with S4E05 airing this Monday upcoming. But so far it looks like only the first two episodes are on Family Go. I don't have time to do TV rips of them right now, but I thought I'd put this out there in case anyone else wants to. In the meantime, I'm working on web-dls of the first 3 seasons.

Yeah, but the problem is that the standard of what is and isn't copyright infringement is really off-kilter. Like, there are full episodes and movies of some things, and then you can't even have reviews or promos of others. Certain channels can get away with violating copyright law, whle most can't even scratch the surface without a problem.

It's now become a real two-way street. I miss the 2006-2007 era, damn it!

Those early days of youtube were a bit of a wild west. I admit, I might not be here now if it weren't for them. But in retrospect they were shit. There are some strange problems with what gets by. Again, videos being claimed is only really a problem if youtube is your *JOB*. A lot of the promos I've uploaded have been claimed, and I've just stopped caring. (Except when it's silly like this one.)

And hey, what is WITH DHX Media just letting people upload their current shows?

  11. I've recently learned that sadly, BBC Kids will shut down at the end of the year. If you see anything on the schedule that you think would be even remotely interesting to have a rip of, you should tell me ASAP. I'm going to focus my efforts for the rest of the year on the channel's shows.

Any chance on doing Prank Patrol episodes?

    3. dangerousvhs

Holy crap, 17 replies! I'll try to respond to everyone here...

BBC Kids just got a branding refresh in 2016. Compare my rips from before that (such as Brady's Beasts) and after (Lilly) and you'll notice the logo's different. They got new promos and bumpers that look pretty good too. Only major provider I can think of that they weren't on was Shaw, though I wonder if that's unrelated to their death. I know they had been pursuing an agreement with them.

This seems to have gone over Arian's head, but Red Dwarf isn't on the channel. Not sure if it ever was, maybe under AA.

Doodlez was on Teletoon back in the day. Trying to rip some episodes, doubt I'll be able to get them all with how erratic the schedule is and the complete lack of guide.

Even HD shows are worth getting from the channel if there isn't a better source readily available for them. I agree it's a waste of my time if there is. Episode 26 of Robin Hood is The Ballad of Robin Hood; John the Hero? Those episodes are on this weekend.

Prank Patrol is being capped. Not sure I'll be able to get every episode. There's 100!? And Arian mentioned they might not all be in circulation either. (On that note, remember that Teleniños exists.)

And, while I'm quite hopeful for Wow (maybe they'll even get some of BBC Kids's orphaned shows) it's pretty sad to see pretty much the last commercial-free kid channel disappear. I don't appreciate how heavily kids are advertised to these days*, so I appreciated BBC Kids as an escape.

*yes it sucked back in the day too. That doesn't justify it.

  12. Reminder that if you want me to do something you should ASK ME ABOUT IT. I can't read minds and it's impossible to keep track of everything, so I only pay attention to what I know about and anything else I might find interesting. If you see something say something. Look at sites like TV Passport or Zap2it for Canadian TV schedules.

True, A lot of episodes had problems on TVO, especially early ones, which had weird-sounding (mono) audio. (Though that's nostalgic in some strange way) But I appreciated that they weren't plastered.

If Arthur appears on Family we'll probably get everything in stereo, plus better quality season 14, which DHX likely has in a progressive format. I suspect they also have 13 in a progressive format, though likely not HD. But older episodes will probably have problems from being decimated to 24p like Caillou. (Sure, I was doing that too, but they did it worse!) Old episodes would probably look like when the first 3 seasons aired on Unis, but without the screwed up interlacing.

I don't think Amazon's copies of the show are very good quality, and doubt PBS will put out any more old episodes on DVD, even though they'd probably sell well. Maybe another company? Mill Creek was somehow able to put out Postcards From Buster.

I was trying to save up for an antenna to do them OTA with better quality. Never happened.

  14. Hey, how about I involve you in the process for once? I'm working on George Shrinks right now, and for some episodes I have multiple different DVD releases of them. What's interesting is that it's very different on each! Take for example, Sunken Treasures. I have it on an older DVD of the same name, and a newer compilation DVD of various Nelvana shows called Ready For Playtime. The older DVD just looks like it was taken directly from the original TV master, but the newer DVD is much better looking, very clear and digital, like they made a new one for it. It's also higher bitrate, interestingly. The picture quality is better in about every way than the older DVD, but the older period-accurate Nelvana logo was replaced with the newer modern one, and also most of the episodes I have will be from BBC Kids, which uses the older version, so the older DVD would be more consistent. And I don't know, maybe people would like the worse-looking picture better? Have a look at this comparison I uploaded http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/115990 and let me know what you think I should do.

For what reason would people prefer a worse-looking picture? Because I can't wrap my head around that. The only reason I can think of would be the logo, which you can easily replace with the old version if needed.

So yeah, definitely go with newer DVD.

    3. dangerousvhs

      dangerousvhs

It's funny actually, I was originally going to use the older DVD for consistency with the tvrip of the rest of the episodes, but as I looked at the newer one more I liked it for the cleaner picture more and more. As for preference otherwise... don't know, that's why I asked! People have asked me for some strange things before, including making good on the name and recording everything onto VHS before uploading...

On the subject of editing in the older logo, I could maybe try that, though it would clash due to being lower quality, but if you want me to put it in maybe I will.

I REMEMBER THIS SHOW. What's funny is that the show is from the same studios who made Braceface, just a different channel (ABC Family for the USA and Teletoon in Canada for the first, PBS for the USA, and TVOntario/YTV/Treehouse in Canada for the other).

  15. After all these years, I've just realized that on a T-160 in EP mode, I could record 14 episodes of a half-hour show. Wish I could go back to 2005* and tell myself that.

*I believe 2005 is around the time my family started buying T-160s, instead of T-120.
