What I read is that 1080i channels (the transmission) are downscaled to 720p.
I can just set my box to upscale everything too, not that it looks very good. (Not sure how you'd determine the signal resolution on Bell hardware though.)

That practice is only done on certain channels in the US. In Canada, everything is broadcast in 1080i/1080p. And of course there's TSN and Sportsnet which broadcast in 4K.

I don't mean the channel downscaling 1080i to 720p (though CBC and Radio-Canada actually do that) I mean Bell recompressing the channels when transmitting them to save bandwidth.
