Right now, I'm juggling Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 with Tales of Xillia 2 on my PS3 (determined to plat the first before I really get stuck into the second), Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment with Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 on my Vita (the translation for the former is so freakin' awful, it actually makes the second arc of the first series look watchable by comparison) and Diablo 3 is the sole game I'm playing on my PS4. Busy busy busy, and the backlog is getting bigger. I got Disgaea 4 on my Vita the other day and I've not even opened it yet...

I've actually bought most of the games I wanted this year, but still to come includes... - Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair - Freedom Wars - Tales of Hearts R - Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire - Dragon Age Inquisition - Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel - Super Smash Bros. for 3DS - Hyrule Warriors - Fairy Fencer F - Lords of the Fallen - TheatRhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call - Bayonetta 2

Xenoblade Chronicles Offered on New Nintendo 3DS
Shatterheartiel replied to StaticX's topic in Gaming Realm
A handheld version of what is easily the greatest RPG of all time? The New Nintendo 3DS just became a day one purchase for me. I don't doubt this will get an overseas release, considering the popularity of the Wii version. It also speaks a lot for the power of the new 3DS - sure, it's no PS Vita, but it's a definite upscale, and it promises some equally exciting prospects for the future. That they call it a remake, and not a port, intrigues me as well. Is this Nintendo misusing the word remake, or are they actually going to add some new content to the game? -
Current Anime Series You're Watching and your thoughts on it?
Shatterheartiel replied to Koby's topic in Anime District
I'm watching Psycho Pass at the moment. I've always had a hit-and-miss relationship with cop shows, and this has thus far been in the hit category, right up there with Ghost in the Shell. The animation style is endearing (I love Akani's eyes, it's like she's in a permanent state of lethargy. xD) and it's both intriguing and disturbing. Awful OP, but I suppose you can't have everything. -
I'd suggest trying both and seeing which you prefer. I usually watch anime dubbed, but if I can't stand the voice actors they use in the English version (in other words, if Yuri Lowenthal is in it in a prominent role) I'll switch to the subbed version. I think watching anime in your native language makes it more enjoyable, but there are exceptions to the rule...I could never watch Gurren Lagann dubbed; the drama in it was absolutely destroyed. There are plenty of anime to choose from for you to wait for something to come out, though - don't feel pressured/impatient to switch to watching things subbed just because they take a little longer to come out!
-
The first time I watch an episode I'll watch the OP - some of them are fantastic; especially if they're utterly messed up, like Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei's - but I rarely watch EDs...the songs are never as good, and I'm not all that interested in the credits anyway. I'll open a webpage and listen to the song once and, if I like it, I'll get the full version. Thereafter, I'll close the video once the episode is over and skip the ED.

Watching Anime Online vs Downloading Anime
Shatterheartiel replied to UpsyDaisy's topic in My Two Cents
I download, because my internet connection can be a real pain in the evening and that's when I tend to watch anime. Downloading removes the potential annoyance of buffering videos...although it does mean I have a ton of anime I've downloaded but not watched yet cluttering up my laptop. -
Don't Be Shy, Tell the Truth. How many hours a day do you "game"
Shatterheartiel replied to Ashanel's topic in My Two Cents
At the moment, I'm probably averaging around five hours a day, although I rarely play for longer than an hour at a time. When I was employed I tried to squeeze in a couple of hours a night, and considerably more at weekends, but I don't game anywhere near as much as I used to regardless...it's just my current unemployment that is making the hours I game so high, aha. -
FFVII, like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Chrono Trigger and numerous others I could name, was revolutionary for its time. The important thing to remember here though is that "revolutionary" does not necessarily translate into "the best" or even "good" and nor does it mean that it hasn't been surpassed since. All it means is that it started a trend. Video games have evolved very little over the last few generations - the graphical leap between the PS1 and PS2 was significantly bigger than the leap between the PS2 and PS3, and the leap between the PS3 and PS4 is barely noticeable. With the focus on style over substance that has become the norm for these so-called AAA titles, and a distinct lack of new ideas, it's quite easy to see why people love these "overrated" games of old. But they came out in a totally different market, in a time when flashy graphics (or at least, 3D graphics) were new and exciting, and so many games that have come out after them have attempted to mimic their style...and thereby their success. Pretty much every 3D Zelda game that has followed OOT has been identical to it. Every JRPG since FFVII has been compared to it in some form. Why? Simply because they were the first to do it, and so little has changed since then; the modifications that have been made to the formula these games set out have been superficial at best. Still, putting Kingdom Hearts up there with the likes of these trend-setters is going a little bit too far, I think. KH is a popular series, yes, but it hasn't had anywhere near as much influence on titles that have followed it since. It certainly hasn't set any standards. It just has a very large fanbase.

After playing the HD remix, I'd be inclined to agree with this assessment. The plot is one giant black hole of contradictions, cliches and pointless diversions - even by Square's/Soft's/Enix's usual standards - and not particularly engrossing anyway, the battle system is more than a little underwhelming even for its time and, for a game crawling with fantastic characters, they're surprisingly bland...I mean, where's the singing? The witty one-liners that make you smile whilst you inwardly cringe at how horrific they are? Where is the Disney soul? It should be like a video game version of House of Mouse with added Final Fantasy characters, and instead it's more like the sort of thing an eight-year-old might post on FF.net. ...that said, I came into Kingdom Hearts extremely late - my only contact with the series before the HD remix was the first DS game, which I played for about two hours before putting it down in annoyance and ultimately selling it - so perhaps my perspective is a tad unreliable...after all, games have gotten better since the first game, and whilst I have played a lot worse, I have played a lot better, too. So, rather than say it's a bad game, perhaps it'd be better to say it just hasn't withstood the test of time as well as people like to make out. I'll get 2.5HD when it comes out and see if the second one is any better, and because I've heard a lot of good things about Birth By Sleep (which, as a prequel, might be a better place to start) but...well, I'll not hold my breath.

Alucard from Hellsing. This is the guy who has to allow people to damage him in order to take any damage at all. ...although I suppose Kaname Madoka could also qualify, if you ignore Rebellion. Which at least 80% of the fandom wish they could do, it appears...

My breaks from anime usually entail re-watching old series that I've not seen for a few years, for lack of anything currently being aired that really grabs me. I'm always watching something - or at least, I have been since I was about thirteen - but I frequently take breaks from things, either to wait for shows to finish airing, revisit some old favourites, or because I just don't feel like it and would prefer to spend my anime time reading or something.

Why haven't YOU seen Space Dandy!?
Shatterheartiel replied to HeavenlyClassic's topic in Anime District
I just haven't gotten around to it yet? I dunno, I'm not really in the mood for a comedy anime right now, and I think I'd prefer to watch it once the hype has died down a little bit...overly active fandoms for anime bother me, because if you voice even the slightest criticism you get crucified for heresy. I'd prefer to avoid getting verbally ripped to shreds if I'm not as keen on it as I apparently ought to be. -
My list at the moment looks something like this: ESSENTIAL Tales of Xillia 2 Dragon Age: Inquisition Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited Fairy Fencer F X Hyperdimension Neptunia Idol PP Dynasty Warrior Gundam Reborn Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (Vita; I have too much going on with my PS3 right now) Atelier Escha & Logy NON-ESSENTIAL (i.e. stuff I won't buy immediately unless I have some money going spare) Etrian Odyssey Untold Kingdom Hearts 2.5HD Remix Drakengard 3 Conception II (PS Vita version) Danganronpa Danganronpa 2 Borderlands 2 Vita Super Smash Bros. 3DS or Wii U Bayonetta 2 Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends complete edition (Vita) The Witch and the Hundred Knight I expect more will pop-up towards the end of the year...hopefully New Atelier Rorona and Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 will get localization annoucements, and Tales of Zestiria might see a winter release if we're lucky...although considering we've already got two (technically three) Tales games this year, I won't hold my breath.

Well, both have suffered tremendously as they've gotten older. The Resident Evil series has ceased to be a survival horror series and instead focused on pathetically predictable jump scares and sub-par action-style gameplay, and the Silent Hill series has adopted Resi's former curse of gimmicky controls and plodding, often tedious narrative. Neither have produced a proper instalment in their respective franchise since the PS2 generation, and with this focus on style over substance that is plaguing the industry, that doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon. Which is a shame, because both were fantastic series back in the day. That said, between the two, I'd go for Silent Hill, if only because the earlier games scared me significantly more than Resi did. The original Silent Hill still gets me from time to time. Resi 4 was a good game, but it just wasn't Resi.

Current Anime Series You're Watching and your thoughts on it?
Shatterheartiel replied to Koby's topic in Anime District
I'm currently watching Guilty Crown...and to be honest I have absolutely no idea why I didn't drop it after the first few episodes. It's a complete train wreck. Not quite as bad as Code Geass - the insufferable hypocrisy that was present in the main characters, making them utterly unlikeable, is mercifully absent in the cast of this - but still pretty damned awful for its painful inconsistency and pointless plot that seems to be trying to draw me in whilst simultaneously telling me to shove off. The concepts are interesting, and the cast isn't all that bad, it just...doesn't make any sense. -
It depends on the series for me, really. There are some anime - Sengoku Basara, Death Note and Gurren Lagann are the three biggest offenders for me - that I cannot abide dubbed, because the drama is completely lost. Japanese people screaming in Engrish is just so much more entertaining than English-speaking people screaming the same lines in English, at least to me. Some lines in the original version make me cringe when they're said in a language I can actually understand, and in cases where the anime is ridiculously overdramatic, it saps the fun of watching it right out of it. The dub cast will affect my decision as well. There aren't any Japanese voice actors I can't tolerate (mostly because the only one I recognize consistently between series is Norio Wakamoto) but there are plenty of dub voice actors I am sick to death of by now, and I've watched more than a few anime subbed instead just so I don't have to listen to them. If it has Yuri Lowenthal or Johnny Yong Bosch in a prominent role, the chances are I'm going to watch it subbed. Although, that said, there are other dubbed voice actors - Crispin Freeman and Liam O'Brien, to name but two - who will immediately draw me to the dubbed version, because I find that I can enjoy a show a lot more if I can understand it without the need for subtitles. As a rule, these days I'll see if it's been dubbed, and if it has I'll look at the voice cast. Depending on who is in it and how prominent the role is depends on whether I'll watch the series subbed or dubbed.

maxiumum number of episodes you have watched in a day?
Shatterheartiel replied to UpsyDaisy's topic in Anime District
I've watched a couple of 12 episode series in a day before, but never any more than that - I have too much else I want to do to sit around watching anime for longer than an hour at most a lot of the time, and I haven't found any anime for a while now (last was Tiger & Bunny, which I watched over the course of two days) that have kept me so engrossed that I haven't wanted to do anything but watch the next episode. -
I finished Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII earlier, and now I'm just killing time by going after the Platinum whilst I wait for my next games (Tales of Symphonia Chronicles and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow II) to arrive. I have mixed feelings about this game; it's a lot better than the nightmarish train wreck that was XIII-2, but I honestly don't think the original game - which wasn't great to begin with - needed two sequels. But it's been a fun enough 40 odd hours ignoring the messy story, and I like seeing things through to the end. Also casually playing Atelier Meruru Plus on my Vita (knowing I have to play it twice for the plat is putting me off it somewhat; I'm not sure how I should tackle my first playthrough when I'll do everything in the second so I keep avoiding it, even though I loved it on PS3) and Pokemon Emerald, since I finished X recently and, thanks to Pokemon Bank, find my previous gen games lacking in pretty much everything. Plus it's been a long time since I played Emerald, so it's nice to go back to it.

Hi! I'm Spectra, and I'm new here. I'm a twenty-four year old (*insert resigned sigh here*) NEET in-between jobs (for five months thus far...finding part-time work is a nightmare) who spends most of his time at the moment watching assorted anime, playing games, reading books and now, probably (hopefully?) posting here and chatting to some like-minded people. I look forward to getting to know some of you better~ ...OK, that's the short version of my little intro. The standard thing you expect to find in every intro thread. What will follow now will be a mini autobiography of sorts, so I can give any curious people an idea of what I'm like etc and maybe make some impromptu friends? Feel free to skip it. In fact, I wholeheartedly endorse skipping it. Mash that Square button! Or scroll. Whichever takes your fancy. Scrolling might be better in this instance, since most PC keys are a squarish shape, so mashing the square button could break your keyboard, fill your screen with letters/number/symbols, or mess something up. Stuff I like in some more detail, then? Classic cartoons! I'm a child of the early 90s, with a bit of 80s and 70s for good measure. It doesn't get much better than the 90s versions of the various Marvel and DC superheroes...well, the less said about the Hulk, the better. I've always hated the Hulk, and I probably always will. But X-Men, Spiderman and Batman were (and still are, in some cases) all fantastic. Animaniacs, Taz (an acquired taste; I hated it when I was younger), Freakazoid, Pinky and the Brain, etc etc, are amongst my favourites as well, and I've probably seen every episode of the original Tom and Jerry (plus Tom and Jerry Kids) and Looney Tunes. Yeah, most people grow out of cartoons, but I never did. Never grew out of Power Rangers, either...well, I stopped watching when they replaced the original Turbo Rangers (was never really a car person anyway, but Tommy was in it until that point, and I worshipped the ground Jason David Frank walked on) but picked it up again with Lightspeed Rescue...gotta buy the DVDs when I have more expendable income than sense again. That said, I don't mind newer cartoons either, so long as they've got a good story or writing and/or are just plain funny. Ben 10: Alien Force won me over after the first series shocked and appalled me (I'm sorry, but Humungousaur singing is one of the greatest things, ever) and the 2003 TMNT reboot was alright...at least up to that awful Fast Forward series. Never saw the appeal of stuff like Phineas and Ferb or Adventure Time, though, and I can't understand how My Little Pony has such a huge fanbase...having watched a few episodes of both incarnations, I think I prefer the original. To each their own, I guess? Batman: The Brave and the Bold is probably my favourite of recent times, though...the Music Meister episode got me. Then Aquaman's Rousing Song of Heroism happened. It's like the original live action series, only animated. Winning combo! I'm a sci-fi fan! Who doesn't like Doctor Who. Well, I liked the old Dalek movie. I grew up watching Stargate, Star Trek (The Next Generation only, mind - Voyager had its moments, but the less said about Deep Space Nine the better, and I think the original series is a bit TOO retro for me...not sure about Voyager, it's a bit...weird. Like the Star Wars prequels. It all feels too flashy to be set before something older than I am) and then when I was a bit older to appreciate things beyond "lasers, boom!" I was introduced to Babylon Five, Battlestar Galactica, Lexx, Andromeda, etc. I read an awful lot as well, although I'm in a bit of a grey area with that at the moment. By that, I mean I'm stuck for something new to read so I'm re-reading all my old books again...I have more books than I thought. Mostly I read fantasy novels although I went through this awful period during my teenage years when I read nothing but Star Wars Expanded Universe novels...I can still name about thirty Imperial Star Destroyers. Heaven help me. They were good books, in my defence. Well, for the most part. Obviously, I'm a gamer as well...an RPG gamer, although I dabble in other genres as well. Except fighting games, because I suck at them, and racing games, because I get my fill of fast cars every time I sit in one with my grandmother behind the wheel. Oh, and sports games, because they remind me of how unfit I am and how I'll probably never even see a tenth of what I'm giving my players for a single match. I'm mostly on my PS3 these days, although I have a Wii-U as well, which is quietly gathering dust until the urge to play Monster Hunter sweeps over me again, or until X gets released. I had an Xbox360, but I sold it, because it became a large DVD player when the PS3 dropped in price enough for me to buy one. It was a stopgap console for me, mostly because I didn't have the money for online and I didn't have any nearby friends for massive Halo parties. Plus I find trophies more satisfying than achievements, and on balance, the PS3 has a bigger and better JRPG library. I miss Magna Carta 2 and Tales of Vesperia, but I can live without them for now. I don't have either a PS4 or Xbone yet, primarily because neither have any games worth playing on them, and nothing interesting has been announced either. I'll probably wind up with a PS4 eventually, but for the time being, I'm happy with what I have. Got myself a 3DS (two, actually; I got an XL with my first paycheck from my old job...I like big screens, I cannot lie) and Vita (an original model, which is just now starting to get some use) as well as some older consoles...I had a weird urge to buy a Gameboy Micro last year. I also watch anime from time to time, although not much holds my interest these days...it's getting harder and harder to find good series, so I hope to find some here, and/or get some recommendations. I finally pulled my finger out and watched Gundam recently - the Universal Century stuff, except for ZZ, because of the lack of Char, and Unicorn, because it's not finished yet and waiting for Hellsing Ultimate to end was bad enough - and I quite liked that. But all the popular stuff I've seen recently has bored me: I didn't like Code Geass, Death Note ended horribly, Madoka was too short and wasn't really as enjoyable as the more light-hearted magical girl shows I've seen, Evangelion made no sense whatsoever to me (but from what I gather, that's not unusual...the films are good though), Dragonball Z gave me a headache (but, oddly, I liked Dragonball a lot) and I pale at the thought of trying to catch up with titans like One Piece or Bleach. So I kinda pick things up on a whim and see where they lead me. My fondness for anime comes mainly from my childhood exposure to Sailor Moon, Digimon, Cardcaptors, Monster Rancher (that does count, right? I'm pretty sure it does) and Studio Ghibli movies. I went through a bit of a Pretty Cure phase last year, although the latest incarnation has put me off it a bit...or, rather, the fandom's reaction to it has put me off. Other stuff...uh, I used to write fanfiction, but I gave up because I wanted to re-write the earlier chapters as I went through it and the whole thing got screwy. I wrote a Pokemon fanfic featuring all the fourth gen Legendary Pokemon before the tenth movie came out, then got VERY discouraged when the plot for that one turned out to be better than my convoluted mess. I used to RP, but poor health and time conspired to draw me away from it. I haven't picked up a pencil in about eight years now; my passion for drawing died after my art GCSE. I'm fairly good with coding for sites, but it's not my favourite way to spend my time. I sing a lot. Badly. Beware me on Skype, I spontaneously burst out into song; I'm like the worst sort of Disney character sometimes. Apparently I have an accent, but obviously, I've never heard it. Probably makes it worse. I could go on and on, but this has probably gone on for long enough now and I doubt anyone opened my thread expecting several paragraphs about how horribly dull I am, no? That's all, folks! I'll close by saying I hope I didn't put too many of you off, and that my inbox is always open if you wanna chat...I'm a shy newbie who doesn't like bugging people because once he starts talking he never shuts up...or hadn't you noticed that? In any case, thanks for reading (or at least looking) and I'll see y'all around~ P.S. I reserve the right to edit this extensively. xD
