  1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)  –  A truly amazing series and has become of the the standards I will use to measure other series.  I found this remake to be an improvement from the original Fullmetal Alchemist (2003); however, not perfect as there were some aspects that the original did better than the remake (for example some of the the homunculi seemed under- or poorly developed in the remake in comparison to the original, such as Lust).  In summary, Brotherhood isn't exactly perfect; albeit, I support the claims that this is a "must-see" series for anime fans.

  2. Ergo Proxy - A great mix of surrealism coupled with philosophy, romance, and just the right pinch of action made this a captivating watch. However, I found the fact that such a short series (23 episodes) had several fillers that added no real substance, detracting. Overall, I still enjoyed this slower-paced series.

  3. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom – I was actually surprised on how much I enjoyed this series. I found the plot to be intriguing with a subtle hint of complexity while slowly evolving into an unexpected climax. You might want to consider it if you are looking for a dark action/drama series.

  4. Gekijouban Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners (8/10)

Kara no Kyoukai is a set of seven movies that each tell a usually-dark story while also comprising a greater whole. The entire series is beautifully animated with a strongly saturated color palette that gives the sense that it was taken straight out of a photograph. The storyline is intriguing; however, some may find it a bit hard to comprehend at first in relation to chronology (the movies were not released in chronological order – for storytelling affect I assume). Overall, a surprisingly great watch.
