Most anime from this generation are pieces of crap. Naruto, Bleach, Haruhi, FMA, One Piece, just to name a few. There are some good anime from the 2000s but most of them suck. I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but Roots Search is better than most new anime coming out. That's right, I said it and i'm not taking it back.

My favorite song in an anime would be Show Must Go On from the band Anthem featured in Devilman: The Birth. The worst would have to be the OP from Gantz.
-
Sc-fi, action, horror, post-apocalyptic, and cyberpunk are my favorites. I mostly like dark and edgy stories.
-
I think mine was either Return of the Jedi or A Christmas Story.
-
Anthem all the way!! Some of their best are Bound To Break, Hunting Time, and Eternal Warrior.
-
I recommend the Devilman OVAs and manga.
-
My favorite mecha anime series is either Armored Trooper VOTOMS or SPT Layzner. I can't decide which one is actually better. They are both superb.
-
I prefer shorter anime. I prefer anime films and OVAs. I usually stay away from TV anime that have more than 52 episodes.... SOMETIMES!

One of the only good live action adaptations of anime are the 2 Golgo 13 movies that came out in the 70s. There was Golgo 13 (1973) and Golgo 13: Kowloon Assignment (1976). Both of these films are extremely rare and I was actually able to get my hands on the Japanese DVDs. Now, I gave the both films to my friend who knows Japanese and has privately subtitled other films for me and my other friends. So after he subtitled both movies I watched them and surprisingly they were really solid movies. Now keep in mind these two movies came out before the 1983 animated film that most people know.

1.) Ninja Scroll (1993) (Movie)
2.) Golgo 13: The Professional (1983) (Movie)
3.) Wicked City (1987) (Movie)
4.) Armored Trooper VOTOMS (1983) (TV Series/OVA)
5.) MD Geist (1986) (OVA) (Original Version)

Cyber City Oedo 808 has 3 episodes that are 50 minutes each. Make sure you watch it subtitled.

Grave of the Fireflies. I dare you guys to watch this and not shed a tear. Just try it. I guarantee that you will be crying after watching it. If you don't cry, you have no heart. I was sobbing for more than 20 minutes after watching it for the first time. So what are you waiting for? Go watch it.

I would definitely have Geist's badass mullet.

Space Fantasia 2001 Nights is a very serious sci-fi OVA. It's pretty good. I recommend it. The 1980 movie Toward The Terra is also very good.
-
The OVA Nineteen 19 has tons of vocal songs in it. It's a very artsy film and I highly recommend it.

When I first started renting anime on VHS I got the dubbed versions. But I found out that most of the VHSs that I rented had horrible dubbing, so after a watching a few tapes I decided to rent subtitled tapes from now on. So I prefer Japanese dialogue over English Dubs.

Those are some I haven't heard of in ages! But here's my list:
Ox Tales
The Legend of the Four Kings
The Heroic Legends of Arislan
3x3 Eyes
The Guyver (the original/OVA series)
Fist of the North Star
DevilMan
Moldiver
Tenchi Muyo
Ninja Scroll
Wicked City (this one almost got me in trouble with my parents!)
Demon City Shinjuku
Megazone 23
Dominion Tank Police
Patlabor
Macross Plus
Orguss 02
AD Police
Appleseed
Akira
Armitage III (though I didn't like it much...might rewatch it)
Dangaioh
Lupin III Movies
Eagle Riders/G Force (it went by a few names...)
Samurai Pizza Cats
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Saban's Adventures of Pinocchio (Mokku of the Oak Tree)
Teknoman (Tekkaman Blade)
I watched anything I could find on Sci-Fi; Fox Kids or Channel 4...though what do you mean by 'childhood'? I watched most of these (and probably a few more) when I was 8-15...man I watched a lot!
I also watched some Western cartoons animated in Japan like The Real Ghostbusters; Thundercats; Moomins; Jayce and Wheeled Warriors; Ulysses 31; The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers etc. There's just so much...and listing them all makes me realise just how much cartoons I watched when I was younger and even now...
It's good to finally see someone who has watched the same type of anime that I watched as a child. There's a ton more to list. Believe it or not, when I was in 5th grade I think, one of my friends had an uncut subtitled Critical Mass copy of Violence Jack: Evil Town. After school we watched it together and I never saw anything like it. I was almost traumatized by the end. Both of us swore to never watch it again until we were 18. I was never the same after it.

I think you should check out something obscure and different. I recommend Wicked City which came out in 1987. It's a very disturbing film. Make sure you watch the subtitled version. Check it out, it's worth a watch.

It would be really cool if Cyber Blue would be animated into an anime. I think it should be animated into a 3 part OVA.
-
Coming soon is a series called DarkLad's Obscure Anime Room. This is a series where I review old obscure anime. My first epsiode planned is a review of the ultra obscure one-shot OVA called Hell Target. I hope this will be fun for me and for you.
-
I actually have all the novels of Vampire Hunter D, all the novels of Wicked City, and the first Violence Jack novel.
-
This halloween I will watch Hellsing, Hell Target, Devilman, Violence Jack, and yes... Roots Search.
-
Currently I am watching The Rose of Versailles directed by Osamu Dezaki. It's surprisingly brilliant. Dezaki is the man and it's a real shame that he is dead. R.I.P.
