Hey! I apologise for the late reply - it's a bad habit...not a sign that I'm not bothered, but rather the world calls to me...
That's an interesting selection of authors - I'm embarrassed to say that I only recognise 5 names, and of those only 3 because I used to work in a bookshop and shelved their work and haven't read them. Watership Down is one of my favourites and I've read a few Stephen King books (The Shining; Misery; Dreamcatcher and one more I can't remember) I love Terry Brooks' Shannara series, though I've only read the first three (Sword; Elfstones and Wishsong)
I really like Fantasy books and the odd Horror/Mystery, though I'm trying to broaden my horizons and pick up a few slightly different ones i.e. women's romance/drama novels. So far I've read Dorothy Koomson (I quite like her writing) and Annie Sanders' Busy Woman Seeks Wife (not what you think it's about
) I'm kind of tackling Lionel Shriver's The Post-Birthday World...I have to say, the woman has interesting ideas (though this is taken from Sliding Doors) but she does go on a bit...too much waffling.Ah and a colleague has me reading Naomi Noviks Temeraire right now...my opinion's a little mixed on this one. I like aspects of it and there are golden moments, but I just don't like the way she writes...I can't quite describe the feeling I get.
A series I've followed quite faithfully (more out of stubborness since I lost interest long ago) is Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series. I liked it a lot in the beginning, but then...it kind of took a turn and I realised he spends about 1/4 to 1/3 of the book recapping what's happened already :/
Sorry, long post!

The woman (Lucrecia) had an affair with his dad?
Did she really?! I never picked up on that...thought it was more hero-worship...but then my thoughts are as follows:
Everyone in FFXIII...just so much annoyance it's not even worth listing the issues I had with them.
All the retcon characters in FFVII from Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus (then again, the games were so lame it's not even worth my time acknowledging them)
Reimi from Star Ocean 4...actually, throw in most of the main female cast (except Lymle), Edge and Faize...I had issues with all of them. They started out alright, until they hit a rut and/or did something totally out of character (as in from left field)

thats totally awesome!!
Wow, thanks
It's not that impressive (I think) seeing as I have much the same trouble as Kaoru - I find it hard to finish something either because I leave it so long that my ideas have faded away, or I can't find a way to continue it

That would make sense if the only thing they literally see in their lives is the B/W TV. I'm pretty sure that folks from back then turned it off every once in a while and went out to the big wide world, which would be full of colour.
True, but my mum hardly had time to watch TV in her day (she was a very busy girl) and she still dreams in either Black and White or Colour - her childhood was around the time of when Black and White transitioned into Colour. So I guess like anything, psychological findings have to be taken with a grain of salt

I've only just started watching this (at much insistence from my bro) What took me so long was that I loved the old series when growing up, and didn't know how I felt watching the reboot with the person behind PowerPuff Girls heading it...though she also did Fosters and I finally gave in. I've only watched the first two episodes so far and I really like it - it's kind of hard to pick a favourite among the ponies, since they all stand out...but Fluttershy ranks near the top.
Though seeing Nightmare Moon's true form, makes me wonder about Princess Celestia...
-
A lot of Disney Movies...it's hard to pick a few favourite ones, though I was sure Road to El Dorado (love this one to bits!) wasn't Disney - it's Dreamworks...
But one's that stick in my mind are:
Sleeping Beauty
Cinderella
Beauty and the Beast
Hercules
Tarzan
Mulan - I agree on Let's Get Down to Business! (to defeat...the Huns!)
and possibly a few others...

I...actually disagree with a lot of points made in that article/first post. Granted it was written in 1998 but the dude just downright ignores a lot of cartoons from the 80's-90's that had older elements. At that time, sure cartoons were aimed at kids, but come on the writers also threw in elements for adult entertainment too seeing that adults would most likely be watching it with their children. Saying there's not enough material in them for adults to latch onto is assuming that all adults are closed minded, for example, take the Winnie the Pooh novels - yes, aimed at children, but try reading it from an adult's perspective and notice the subliminal adult messages.
Amercian animated stories have just as much capacity to be like Japanese animated stories - the writer used the example of King of the Hill - that is not an episodic cartoon; there are elements that continue through to further the story such as Bobby and Khan Jr's relationship; Luanne and Lucky, of course the series has come to an end now so that's an end to an era. As mentioned by other posters, Marvel and DC have some great successes under their belt with the 90's Batman and 90's Spider-Man/X-Men and other series I may have forgotten.
I admit, I also thought at some point Anime was superior to more recent American cartoons (I'm talking from late 90's-2000's) but thanks to my brother, I've come to rediscover joy in watching some newer titles like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends; Generator Rex; Ben 10; Danny Phantom - all aimed at children but with appeal for an older audience if you just gave it a chance. Japanese Anime has just as much capacity to fail as American Cartoons do.
Also, I'm sure the Manga was in existence before WWII...as part of early Japanese art; post-WWII only boomed it into the industry it is today.
Interestingly, on my recent trip to HK and visiting their history museum, I learned that China used to homegrow (for lack of a better word) their own comics for much the same reason in Japan and the West - for escapism. However, with the rise in popularity of Japanese Manga, homegrown Chinese Comics (that dealt with similar issues) have dropped considerably in their market.

My childhood animes were mostly on VHS.
Some of my childhood animes are:
Project A-ko
Wicked City (Yes I watched this as a kid. I got mentally scarred for life because of how disturbing it was)
MD Geist
Dominion Tank Police
Kiki's Delivery Service
Astro Boy (80s version)
Genocyber
Ninja Scroll
and among others...
Those are some I haven't heard of in ages! But here's my list:
Ox Tales
The Legend of the Four Kings
The Heroic Legends of Arislan
3x3 Eyes
The Guyver (the original/OVA series)
Fist of the North Star
DevilMan
Moldiver
Tenchi Muyo
Ninja Scroll
Wicked City (this one almost got me in trouble with my parents!)
Demon City Shinjuku
Megazone 23
Dominion Tank Police
Patlabor
Macross Plus
Orguss 02
AD Police
Appleseed
Akira
Armitage III (though I didn't like it much...might rewatch it)
Dangaioh
Lupin III Movies
Eagle Riders/G Force (it went by a few names...)
Samurai Pizza Cats
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Saban's Adventures of Pinocchio (Mokku of the Oak Tree)
Teknoman (Tekkaman Blade)
I watched anything I could find on Sci-Fi; Fox Kids or Channel 4...though what do you mean by 'childhood'? I watched most of these (and probably a few more) when I was 8-15...man I watched a lot!
I also watched some Western cartoons animated in Japan like The Real Ghostbusters; Thundercats; Moomins; Jayce and Wheeled Warriors; Ulysses 31; The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers etc. There's just so much...and listing them all makes me realise just how much cartoons I watched when I was younger and even now...

Hunter X Hunter. Ending drives me nuts.
I planned on checking this out but never got around to it, however isn't it currently being rebooted to be closer to the source?
My wishlist:
Fruits Basket - either a second season or remake, though I remember there being an announcement saying it wouldn't happen...I can still hope...The ending left a big question mark in my mind and it clearly showed the director had no understanding of what the story was about.
The Heroic Legends of Arislan - again, either a continuation or complete reboot. The ending didn't feel complete and all sorts of Anime-politics came into it which ruined consistency, so I hope they can overcome that.
Tytania - needs to be continued since the ending was left pretty open, but the author hasn't updated the novel in years, so I'd rather wait for it to have more source to work with.
The Legend of the Four Kings - The ending felt unresolved and I hope it gets an expansion.
3x3 Eyes - same as Arislan. It again was left very open and there's more than enough material to use to expand on the story.
The Guyver - needs to be continued; the ending was a horrid cliffhanger and the dub was so-so at best.
Deadman Wonderland - while I liked the series as it was my introduction, I realise it left a lot of elements out so it could do with a second season or a reboot.
Nyan Koi - The ending left me wanting more and I need to know how it ends.
There are probably a few more, but I could go on. Two I would have liked a continuation/remake to - Rurouni Kenshin and Berserk are being rebooted anyway, so yay!
Edit
Of course I realise that half my wishlist is made up of series over 10 years old, so a continuation isn't likely...but again, a girl can dream.

Greetings - I'm new too, so I feel weird welcoming you seeing as I'm still working my way around haha! Oh, don't pay any attention to my Join Date - it's a lie!
Let's ask something different...what kind of books catch your fancy?

I love writing - when I was in secondary school, I always carried a notepad to write in. It is odd how stories can come to a person and I've managed to jot some of these down and tie a few together to create a larger world. I've written short stories; poems and some novel-length ideas - I hope to get these published one day, providing they're good enough

Right now, I miss not being able to write as much as I used to and so I sneak the time when I can and I have a few ideas in the works - both original writings and fanfiction.
My fanfiction can be viewed here: http://www.fanfiction.net/~erutanxiku
and my original works don't have a home yet...except for my USB...

When I played the game, I thought it was 'Tie-dus' for pretty much the same reason as Phoenix0402 said - his affinity for water. But then I watched the 'Making of...' DVD bundled with my copy of FFX and his VA said 'Tee-dus' and this pronounciation was further backed by further reading where his name has roots with an old Japanese word 'Tiida' which was related to the Sun (hence Sun-related weapon powers-ups in the EN version; sunny disposition; tanned skin; light hair) to complement Yuna which has roots in the Moon (Moon-related weapon power-ups; reserved personality; fair skin; air of mystery...)
The symbolism was quite deep and fun to realise once that puzzle piece was put in place.

Actually it's not the eyes that see it's the brain that has the visual power, our eyes just send the signal to brain which it converts into signals. Do you know that blind people do not see visual things in their dreams they hear voices or noise in their dreams.
Interestingly, did you know people who grew up watching Black and White television dream in Black and White?
Depends on why they're blind, and if they were born that way, or something caused it. If they lived as a sighted person, and were then in an accident that damaged only their eyes, they would still see images in their dreams. If the accident damaged the visual center in the brain, they would not. And if they were born blind, their brain wouldn't know what visual stimulation was, so they wouldn't see anything even in their dreams. This is something I have to look forward to, since having a progressive genetic condition that will result in me losing my sight in...maybe 25-50 years, I'll let you know how that goes whether my dreams are in 'fullscreen' or 'limited screen' until nothing
I could probably ask people in my support group actually...kind of makes me wonder if a person's sense of vision affects what they see in their dreams...As to the topic, I don't think the brain itself can have experiences on its own...seeing as if it's taken out of the body, it loses the mechanism by which it experiences the world. The two are meant to work in tandem for something (your awareness to encounter these experiences) to exist.
As for the idea of it being the seat of the Soul...I don't think so, but that's a whole other discussion. Don't get me wrong, I do believe in a Soul, but I don't think it's a spiritual manifestation of my current being.

Mine is a contraction of my usual Username - ErutanXiku -> EXiku. (Xiku pronounced Ziku, though thinking about it Shiku sounds quite cool too
)The origin goes back to when I was in sixth form and really into role-playing and Dragonball Z. A friend and I would RP through MSN; I came up with Erutan C. M. Xiku as my character name and it stuck. I also go by other variations like ECMX; Eru and Erumiran.
The 'Miran' bit doesn't stand for the 'M' - Miran is probably my first username and was a contraction of Miranda (a character from The Legend of Dragoon) I didn't stick with it for long as shortly after that I met my RP-buddy.
Only once did I go by a completely different name for a short time on a DBZ RPG board (Golden Saiyans) and that was Cephilroud - an OC character I created when writing my first FFVII fanfic: Final Fantasy VII: Destiny of the One Winged Angel.
Thus is my tale

...but personally I look at it this way, whatever feels right to each person is what is really important, and that to the best of a person's ability they should decide that based on their own feelings and not from peer and social pressure. I see nothing embarrassing in being a virgin anymore than I see anything embarrassing in being a slut (which would no question describe myself as I have noted in other threads and I am clearly not embarrassed by and admitting to), what is truly important is that old expression: To thine own self be true. THAT is what really matters IMHO. What should ALWAYS matter most in such things is how one feels for one's self, not what others think or what you think others think about something, because this is one of those things we all must live with by ourselves individually and is something central to how we define who we are to ourselves (while things like sexual orientation and behaviour is and should not the sole/main criteria by which a person sees/defines themselves it is also foolish to pretend they are not a important element/aspect in doing so).
This. Exactly that - whatever feels right to you is most important. I know saying it easy; the reality is that we're all judged by people. While I have never been with anyone, it's only because I've never had the opportunity to - Mr. Right's playing hard to get. That said, I am not ashamed to say that I'm a virgin (my mind on the other hand...) While I do feel the pressure of society and the desire to pair up with someone, I remind myself that I really want to make the right choice seeing as I've been let down so many times by people and I'm not really in a position to stake such strong feelings only to be disappointed.
Heh, maybe I'm a relationship-phobe! But no...I also don't think I'm mature enough in myself to be with someone.
Also, feel free to disagree, but in a sense I think people can still be virgins - physically you've had experience, but if it's your first time with someone (regardless if they're your X-th partner) you're inexperienced with them. Sure you know what to do, but do you know the right buttons? In that sense, you wouldn't know what to do... >.>

I first played SO3 though I have yet to finish it - I think I was level grinding because the battles were getting tougher towards the end, but that sparked my love and I have SO1 and SO2 on the PSP (which I still have to play and will after completing SO3)
I played SO4 and thought it was really good up until a certain point and so it's not one of my favourites. I'm debating on whether to get it for the PS3 though...but since I didn't like it all that much...is it still worth getting despite having aesthetic differences?
-
Just finished Tron Evolution and am now playing El Shaddai.
Also playing Duodecim when I can be bothered (level grinding = so much annoyance...) and needing to finish sweeping up KH: BBS (the sidequests and extra requirements for the secret video)
Also, when I can, White Knight Chronicles I (online stuff only); MvC3; BlazBlue Continuum Shift; SSFIV and CoD MW2. I'll probably get back to switching between these lot when I finish El Shaddai or need a break...

I know her name is Aerith...even KHII (I think?) pronounces it! But for the life of me, I can't stop calling her Aeris...I've played that game 3-4 times before the correction came out. If she was a real person that I knew personally, I'd make the effort to fix it...but she's not.
This is a dilemma for me - I don't want to appear as the stuck-up stubborn fan who denies change; I accept the intended name...but I can't change my habit...not yet anyway. I guess I can look at it as being part of a generation who grew up and came into being before translators wised up?
My only wish is that, please don't rag on me for calling her Aeris (even in my fanfiction) Those mistranslations shaped the world of FFVII for me, and perhaps made it more dramatic - such as the idea that Tseng was dead (mistranslation), rather than mortally wounded (what actually happened)

If the new Deus Ex was anything to go by, then SE seems very hopeful to be hitting the 20-region.
In all seriousness though, at this stage I've lost all hope for future FF titles. I've disliked almost everything SE has released after Sakaguchi was thrown out and Nojima went freelance. Saying that, despite my lack of hope for improvement in quality in the near future, some part of me really wants them to find their feet and recapture what they had pre-Wada.
While the idea of FFXIII-2 churns my stomach, I will be buying it simply to see if it is an improvement on XIII.
I feel that the idea of Final Fantasy has changed so much that it's gone farther away from what it was. Each title telling it's own story without competing with previous installments, or having to live up to some kind of legacy. While X-2 was fun in terms of its gameplay, it also opened up a path that ruined the complete-ness of a title. It gives SE an excuse to leave a story half-finished or barely even polished, if they can whip out a sequel or related title to add depth. A title I really feel did not need this was FFVII - those sequels/prequels have so many holes in them it's not even funny if they're actually supposed to tie in with the original title.
So to answer - despite the dropping quality, I think Final Fantasy will continue and then when they reach a point where it's make or break, SE will have to repeat the origins of Final Fantasy and hope to God it pulls through.
And no, I do not want an FFVII remake...especially if it gives them an excuse to include their retcon characters.

Hi everyone - thanks so much for the kind welcome! I do hope to be on my best behaviour, though if I do step of line feel free to point me to the nearest wall

@Oblivia - Let's hope the shadows don't tempt me...hopefully they won't provided my internet service is back to its usual 'reliability' Though of course, I've also just started a new game...

In an effort to help improve the site on topics that don't involve pirated goods (anime downloads and such) I'd like to get the main site for Kametsu (http://kametsu.com) active again. For now this will include the latest Anime News, but also Anime Reviews.
This is kind of right up my alley - I'm an intermittent blogger (I've taken a break while I purchase my own domain and perform a migration) and also use WordPress. I used to write reviews for an Anime-TV website until they shut down a few years back, so would be happy to write reviews and first impressions for your blog (for Anime and/or Games...perhaps Manga and Books...)
I've been getting back into watching series lately - does it have to be the latest shows or can it be reviews of older titles as well?
-
As you can tell by my join date, I've had this account for some time but have chosen instead to lurk (read: Internet broke and then life caught up and I almost forgot this account existed)
I have now decided to step out of the shadows and reveal my true self!
Hi! I'm EXiku - I look forward to doing my best to being a part of this community. My hobbies lie in Anime; Manga; Cartoons; Comics; Games; Books; Drawing; Writing and Archery.

Lucid Dreaming
in Balamb Café
Posted
I'm not sure if this was lucid dreaming since I was already asleep, but it was a point where my dream crossed into reality. In real life my brother woke me up - he's like that; he likes to say good morning even though I'm not up yet
- he had a bit of a sore throat going and me, I was aware that I was awake, I knew I was talking to my brother and yet I was still dreaming. I was talking to him and everything I said I fully believed; I asked what was up with his voice and he said he had a sore throat and I said that he didn't and it was an organism latched onto the back of his neck that also gave him a special ability while making his voice hoarse. I talked to him a bit more and he almost began to believe what I was saying and I said that I was going to get up now and reached for my glasses. I put them on and woke up completely - I asked my brother what I had been talking about and he was confused thinking I was kidding; I said that I wasn't, I really didn't know - I knew I had been talking and saying something just now but I had completely forgot and then he told me everything I had said, which brought it all back.
Throughout that whole episode of whatever it was, I knew I was fully aware but also believed everything I had said about this other world believing it to be reality, until I put on my glasses and 'awoke', forgetting it all completely (or at least felt it slipping away...) I only remember what I said (which I plan to use for a story) because my brother refreshed my memory at the time because he wanted to know more about what I was telling him :/
