Good review.
I have to admit I had a hard time getting into this one since I was such a huge fan. Like you said by the time you made it to episode 13 it was a lot easier to see it as a different series and allow myself to get immersed in it.
Well worth the journey and had some amazing action sequences.

I missed it in theatres but definitely worth grab from my local Redbox when I get the chance.

Paprika, Howl's Moving Castle, Appleseed, Appleseed Ex Machina, and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
Those are good standalone movies that require you to know anything about a TV series like some of the ones mentioned before.

My wife, then girlfriend, was not an anime fan so I had to ease her into it.
The trick for me was Gundam Seed, Gundam 00, Xam'd, Code Geass, Scryd, and Mushi-shi.
The result is she's a huge Gundam fan and has gone through my collection pulling out stuff to watch with me. For instance, she grabbed Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell without being prompted.

I've been thinking about watching it on Netflix. After this review I think I'll add to my queue. Thanks.

Goku.
Superman has the same powers he had in the beginning while Goku is always growing in strength and abilities.

Another tough choice but I'll go with Cowboy Bebop. It was one of my first three anime series and left a lasting impression. It also edges Samurai Champloo out because of the variety of the music and just how great the soundtrack is as a whole.
Samurai Champloo is not to be discounted tho as it was a phenomenal series.

Just finished up Gundam 00 S1 & S2 with my wife. Was my second time but she had not seen it all yet.
I'm getting her caught up on Ghost in the Shell: SAC.
Personally I just finished Baccano and Gunslinger Girls S2.

This a tough one...
Gundam Wing was my first exposure to Gundam and anime so it'll always have a place in my heart/memory.
Gundam Seed S1 was excellent and extremely good, but I really did not like Shin in S2.
Gundam 00 is just all around a great series and was even better on the second watch through.

Burn Notice
Also enjoy: Sanctuary, Castle, NCIS, V, Outsourced, Leverage, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and Real Time with Bill Mahar

On final stages of Castlevania: LoS and attempting to finish Final Fantasy XIII so I'm ready for the sequel.
Next on deck is Brutal Legend, Heavy Rain, and probably Ghost Trick.

Yeah Death Note was great show and the best part was that not all of the plot twists were obvious.
You should try Ergo Proxy or Gantz

Doom 3 in the dark with 5.1 surround sound. When hell breaks loose you feel it!
-
Thor, Pirates 4, and X-men: First Class... Thor was suprisingly the best of the three.

Just dropping in to say hello. Can't believe I missed this site for so long.
Great site for those of us who enjoy the English dub.

The Full Metal Panic series got my non-anime fan wife hooked. That and Gundam Seed/Destiny and Gundam 00.
