The entire entertainment industry is killing itself and it's starting with the worst offenders first. I do a lot of conventions and I don't have any problem going into a dealer's room and laying down a nice chunk of change. But I spend the vast majority of my money on "accessory" purchases. Everything from T-shirts to key chains. These are, for the most part, licensed products and the same studios that produce the anime get the revenue for my new messenger bag. Still my friends and I often lament the lack of selection. The problem is that over priced DVD's limit the fan market, even with filesharing (I refuse to call it piracy, I've never pillaged and burned anyone's TV console to get their DVD's) If anime was more affordable more people would buy it, more people would see it and more people would just have to have a new character plushie at the next convention. This is more work, and no one in the entertainment industry actually wants to do any of that. As a business owner myself I can tell you; you have to sell the customer what they want at a price they can afford. You can't expand your business by milking people.
