Yuuki’s earliest memory is of a snowy night in winter, when she was attacked by a vampire and was saved by another, Kaname Kuran. Ten years later, Yuuki Cross, the adopted daughter of the headmaster of Cross Academy, has grown up and become a prefect for the school with two purposes: to protect the Day class students (humans) from the Night class students (vampires) and to protect the true identity of the Night class students from being discovered by the Day class students. Her fellow guardian, Zero Kiryu, a childhood companion whose parents were killed by a pureblood vampire, is now determined to kill them all and refuses to trust them. Through a cruel twist of fate, Zero becomes a vampire himself, having been bitten by a pureblood vampire four years before.
Yuuki Kuran, is the adoptive daughter of the headmaster of Cross Academy, and is a member of the school’s disciplinary committee, which is a Guardian for Cross Academy. Ten years prior to the events of Vampire Knight, the Kuran family was attacked by Rido Kuran, so Yuuki’s mother Juri, wanting Yuuki to live as a normal human, sealed Yuuki’s memories, at the cost of her own life, and Headmaster Cross took her in. She lost all memories of her life before the attack, but since Kaname rescued her when she was attacked by a vampire, she has been harboring deep feelings for him. She admired Kaname since she was little until present time. Yuuki is usually a cheerful and carefree girl. She has also let Zero Kiryu, a childhood friend, drink her blood, hoping to save him from insanity. Although she cares deeply about Zero, it is yet to be revealed if she cares for him in a romantic sense or not as she was taken by surprise when he tried to kiss her.
Zero is also a Cross Academy Guardian and likewise on the disciplinary committee. Yuuki has cared about him as a close friend ever since he was brought into their home. His family, one of vampire hunters, was murdered by the pureblood vampire Shizuka Hiou when he was young. He harbors a deep hatred for vampires and claims to have taken on the role of Guardian to learn how to hunt them better. In truth, Zero was bitten during the attack on his family and therefore was turned into a vampire, something that has been kept secret even from Yuuki until his vampire urges began to surface and became uncontrollable. As Zero’s body rejects the blood tablets that most vampires take to control their hunger, Yuuki began letting him drink her own blood, which helps his thirst for blood, but he is ultimately to become a Level E vampire. The story implies that Zero harbors romantic feelings for Yuuki.
A pureblood vampire who saved Yuuki from an attack by another vampire when she was five years old. Kaname is the class president of the Night Class, both feared and respected by the other Night Class students. While he is cold and authoritative towards his contemporaries in the Night Class, he is always kind and sweet to Yuuki. He has shown that he cares for Yuuki in a romantic sense ever since he saved her. He is also Yuuki’s fianceé and “so called” brother. Apparently, he allows Zero to live because he knows his death would sadden Yuuki and because when he cannot protect Yuuki, he knows that Zero will be there. However, he has another reason for keeping Zero. He is both jealous and angry with Zero for biting Yuuki and endangering her life.
Zero’s younger twin brother. When they were younger, they were both taught by Toga Yagari to become vampire hunters. Ichiru, however did not seem to share Zero’s natural ability and was often ill. Zero and Ichiru were very close as children, although later Ichiru claims to have hated Zero after overhearing that his parents preferred Zero over himself. Shizuka let Ichiru drink her blood to strengthen him and cure his chronic ill health, although she did not turn him into a vampire and he remains a human.
The vice-president of the Night Class, he is a noble-class vampire nearly as powerful as Kaname, whom he is close to and respects. He is kind and lacks the dark atmosphere that surrounds most vampires, making him appear more like a human. His favorite reading material is manga; in one chapter, it seems he forced Aidou into reading a vampire manga series. Takuma appears to be aware of Kaname and Yuuki’s relationship, and has asked Yuuki why her current relationship with Kaname no longer is the same as the one they had when she was a child. Takuma’s grandfather, who is a member of the Senior Council of Vampires and is very powerful, educated him and has high expectations of him. The reason Takuma’s grandfather allowed him to come to Cross Academy was to spy on Kaname. However, Takuma does not want to hurt Kaname because they are good friends.
Nicknamed “Idol” by the Day Class girls. Along with his cousin Akatsuki Kain, Hanabusa Aidou is known among the Night Class as “Kaname-sama’s right hand” and has a fierce admiration for Kaname. Aidou is a noble-class vampire and possesses the ability to control ice. Though he appears cheerful and friendly one moment, he can quickly become vindictive and cruel the next. Though loyal to Kaname, he has a tendency to overstep his boundaries, which results in Kaname punishing him if discovered. He has also been aware that Zero is a vampire, though he did not reveal it to anyone else because he felt it would not benefit himself in anyway and because he takes no pleasure in revealing secrets. Aidou is not overtly fond of Yuuki and dislikes the attention that Kaname gives her, but tolerates her presence because Kaname loves her. Aidou eventually develops an understanding for Yuuki when she claims that she will remain loyal to Kaname, regardless of what he says or does.
Headmaster Kaien Cross
Yuuki’s adoptive father, who also took Zero into his home for several years. Headmaster Cross dreams of peace between humans and vampires, and established the Night Class to promote understanding between the two races. Cross is shown to have a habit of provoking Zero and is eccentric in some ways, but he has a serious side as well. It is later revealed that he was a former vampire hunter. He seems to be close to Kaname, and knows Kaname’s parents (both of whom are dead and founded the Cross Academy peace treaty), since he is indebted to them.
The current top ranked vampire hunter, Touga Yagari, formerly trained Zero to be a vampire hunter. He lost his right eye trying to save Zero long ago. He showed up once at Cross Academy serving for a short while as a Day Class substitute teacher, also teaching Ethics to the Night Class, and to decide whether Zero is considered dangerous or not. He appears briefly later on, when he appears shocked about the Council of Ancient’s decision to punish Zero. Touga Yagari was the one whom gave the Bloody Rose to Zero, and later joins Chairman Cross’s side in protecting the Academy.
The pureblood vampire who bit Zero; even her fellow vampires are uneasy around her. She is called “Madly Blooming Princess” by her fellow vampires. A manservant whom she loved (a former human vampire, falsely classified by the Hunter’s Association as Level E) was assigned to be killed by a Kiryu vampire hunter. Enraged and vengeful, she attacked the Kiryu family, killed Zero and Ichiru’s parents, turned Zero into a vampire, and took Zero’s twin, Ichiru, in as a devoted servant. Shizuka’s blood can prevent Zero from falling to Level E, and thus Yuki risked her life for Zero to be able to drink Shizuka’s blood. However, to protect Yuuki, Kaname kills Shizuka and drinks her blood, leaving only a small amount for Zero to drink. Unfortunately the blood was drunk by Ichiru who arrived at the scene first. Before dying, Shizuka warns Kaname that he will live in darkness and has summoned a sinister future for himself.
Yuuki’s dorm-mate and best friend since junior high, Yuuki often refers to her as Yori-chan. Yori seems to be one of the few girls who is not interested in the Night Class. She finds them a bit scary and stated that she would prefer someone from the day class. Yori is also very observant, as she notices a lot of things that happen to Yuuki, especially when she gets hurt or is very depressed. She helps Yuuki a lot.
Vampires in Vampire Knight
In Vampire Knight, vampires can have children among themselves and with humans, and they age, albeit at a much slower rate than humans. Vampires are nocturnal and they dislike sunlight, but exposure to it does not harm them. They are likewise immune to most of the traditional vampire weaknesses such as crosses, garlic, and holy water. They can also regenerate quickly and easily when wounded, therefore making them very hard to kill unless a weapon made especially for vampire hunting is used. An example of a vampire weapon is a gun called “Bloody Rose”. In episode 6, an example of a bullet that contains anti-vampire magic can also be used to kill a vampire.
Vampires organize their society based on the purity of their blood. Level A are the Purebloods – a very small but very powerful minority. Only a bite from a pureblood can change a human into a vampire. Pureblood siblings sometimes marry each other to keep the bloodline pure, which is not a rare practice. Level B refers to Noble vampires with advanced powers. Ordinary vampires make up Level C, by far the largest group. Level D consists of vampires who were once human; they are a small group, as turning humans into vampires is forbidden and only a handful of pureblood vampires would dare to. The final designation, Level E, is separated from the others because it is reserved for former human vampires who have become violently insane. Falling to Level E is considered the inevitable fate of all former human vampires, who can never completely accept their vampiric instincts and their need for blood. A Level D vampire can prevent itself from ever becoming a Level E if they drink the blood of a Pureblood. Level D or E vampires are left in the care of Level B vampires and purebloods, so they can keep them in check.
Vampires have warred with human vampire hunters for centuries, though the existence of vampires, and the war itself, is kept secret from most humans.
