Doctor Who

I haven't really watched much with David Tennant, only a couple of Episodes when I started watching it on Netflix. But on TV such as BBC America I have watched about a seasons worth of Matt Smith, and I seem to like Matt Smith more, I don't know why, but I just do. Doctor Who in general is just awesome! I see why it's SO popular out there... such as the UK.

Matt Smith Leaving 'Doctor Who'

BBC announced Smith's departure will take place after he appears in the 50th anniversary and the 2013 Christmas special. Smith first stepped into the TARDIS in 2010. Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer on "Doctor Who," praised Smith's work on the long-running series.

"[G]reat actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt -- bow ties were never cooler," he said. "Of course, this isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now -- all unknowing, just going about their business -- is someone who's about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and 'Doctor Who' will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting!"

Rumors of Smith's departure first surfaced in March. “I am very happy doing it. I go and I do the anniversary special, then I go away for a bit. Then I come back and I do the Christmas special. It's sort of one of those jobs that you have to take year by year really because it's 10 months a year. It's all-consuming so I don't think you can plan five, six years ahead or even two years ahead," Smith said on Jonathan Ross’s show in March 2013. "At the moment, it’s 2013 and we will see what 2014 holds."

Now, it's official. Smith said "Doctor Who" was "the most brilliant experience" thanks to the cast, crew and fans. "I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realize all the elements of the show and deliver 'Doctor Who' to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

"Having Steven Moffat as showrunner write such varied, funny, mind-bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career," Smith continued in a statement. "It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor."

Smith praised the fans of "Doctor Who" for being "unlike any other" for their dedication to the series.

"Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!" he said. "t's been an honor to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys."

The "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary airs Saturday, November 23, 2013 on BBC America.

I know many members here don't like Matt Smith, but I think he's fantastic and will be sad to see him go.

Matt Smith was good I kind of think of him as my substitute for Chris Eccleston. Although he was only the Doctor for a short time his antics always made me laugh.

I liked Chris Ecclestion as the doctor and I really wish he played the role for a little longer

To be honest I did not look into why he quit in the first place or if BBC wanted him to move on or what. I guess I'll just have to look it up.

Here's an article about why Christoper Eccleston left. I'm not sure how accurate it is, because I'm not familiar with the source.

Thanks tragedy I thought he might of had some misgivings with the higher ups and this proves it. As for den of the geek there usually pretty reliable. I have been following there newscasts for information on the Battlestar Galactica Movie to ascertain where the hold up in production is.

Peter Capaldi Is The New Doctor, Beginning With 'Doctor Who' Season 8

Peter Capaldi was announced as the new Doctor during a "Doctor Who" special on BBC America and BBC One on Sunday.

"Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege," Capaldi said. "Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight."

Capaldi's other credits include "The Thick Of It," "The Hour," "In The Loop" and "Torchwood." The actor has also appeared on "Doctor Who" before in the 2008 episode "The Fires of Pompeii" as Caecilius.

Host Zoe Ball unveiled Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor in his first ever interview in front of a live studio audience. The half-hour show included Doctors old and new, including current Doctor Matt Smith, and "Doctor Who's" lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat.

“It's an incendiary combination: one of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television," Moffat said. "Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!"

Take a look at the first official "Doctor Who" photo of Capaldi below (CAUTION: It's a rather large image):

Capaldi replaces Smith, who played the Doctor since 2010. He announced his departure in 2013 and released the following statement: "Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special! It's been an honor to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys."

Jenna Coleman, who joined "Doctor Who" in Season 7 as the Doctor's companion Clara, will remain with the series for Season 8. After Capaldi was announced as the new Doctor, Coleman released the following statement: "I'm so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the Twelfth Doctor. With Steven's writing and his talent I know we'll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of No. 12. I can't wait to start this new adventure!"

Before the official announcement, many speculated that it was time for a woman to star in "Doctor Who." Oscar winner Helen Mirren said she won't play the Doctor, but it's time there was a woman in the role. "I’m not going to be the first female 'Doctor Who.' No, no, no. Absolutely not, I absolutely wouldn’t contemplate that ... but I do think it’s well over-time to have a female 'Doctor Who' ... I think a gay, black female 'Doctor Who' would be best of all,” Mirren told Daybreak.

"Doctor Who" returns for its 50th anniversary special on Saturday, November 23 on BBC America.

I was watching the special, and when they announced his name, I literally went, "... I have no idea who that is." I'm sure he'll be great, but I have a feeling it'll be hard to top Matt Smith; he has been my favorite so far. But I've always loved the new Doctor even more than the last, so you never know! Very interested to see how it goes.
