Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf

The official Japanese website of the Spice and Wolf franchise has confirmed that a second television anime season has been green-lit. Director Takeo Takahashi and screenplay writer Naruhisa Arakawa will return for Spice and Wolf II. However, Toshimitsu Kobayashi (El Hazard: The Alternative World, Fate/stay night) will replace Kazuya Kuroda as the character designer and chief animation director. Likewise, the Brain's Base studio (MazinKaiser, The Boy Who Saw the Wind) will be animating instead of IMAGIN. The anime adapts Isuna Hasekura and Jū Ayakura's acclaimed novel series that avoids the usual sword-and-sorcery trappings of fantasy stories and focuses on how business (and religion) gets done in a medieval world — with a wolf girl. Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu will reprise their roles as the peddler Lawrence and the wolf girl Horo who embark on a journey together.

Although a North American license for the anime has not been announced yet, Yen Press did acquire the original light novels for English translation.

The March issue of ASCII MediaWorks' Dengeki Maoh magazine announced last Tuesday that an unaired "Act 0" for the upcoming Spice and Wolf II anime series will be bundled with next Spice and Wolf visual novel on April 30. The Dengeki Bunko Visual Novel imprint will bundle Isuna Hasekura and Jū Ayakura's Ōkami to Kin no Mugiho book with the Act O "Ōkami to Kohaku-iro no Yūutsu" DVD.

Since the DVD is advertised as shipping "right before the second season," the second television season will not start before April. The anime adapts the acclaimed novel series that avoids the usual sword-and-sorcery trappings of fantasy stories and focuses on how business (and religion) gets done in a medieval world — with a wolf girl. Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu will reprise their roles as the peddler Lawrence and the wolf girl Holo who embark on a journey together.

Although Kadokawa Pictures USA acquired an in-house license for the first Spice and Wolf anime season in North America, no distributor has been announced yet. Yen Press did acquire the original light novels for English translation.

Note: The Dengeki Bunko imprint uses the term "visual novel" differently from other publishers. It uses "visual novels" for regular text novels and not computer or game software. For example, Dengeki Bunko published a Ballad of a Shinigami "visual novel" book with a CD and a Kino's Journey "visual novel" book with a DVD.

The North American anime distributor Funimation is announcing on Saturday at Anime Boston that it has acquired the license for the first season of the Spice and Wolf anime series. The anime adapts Isuna Hasekura and Jū Ayakura's acclaimed light novel series that avoids the usual sword-and-sorcery trappings of fantasy stories and focuses on how business (and religion) gets done in a medieval world — with a wolf girl. Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu play the peddler Lawrence and the wolf girl Holo, two unlikely companions who embark on a journey together. IMAGIN produced the animation, and Kadokawa Pictures USA handled the distribution arrangements.

A second anime season, Spice and Wolf II, will premiere in Japan this July. Yen Press acquired the original light novels and Keito Koume's manga adaptation for English translation.

Hi Guys,

It's been a while since season 2 of "Spice and Wolf" anime was made in 2009. With the light novel series due to be finished in February I was wondering if anybody has heard of any rumors or facts about the anime been finished (Hell they are only now just getting round to getting season 2 dubbed!!!)

Any info no matter how small would be appreciated.

Thanks.
