What is Naruto Shippuuden …?
Written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto is a Japanese manga series with an anime adaption. The main character, Naruto Uzumaki, is a loud, hyperactive, unpredictable adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become a Hokage, the ninja in the village acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all. Naruto Shippuuden is part two of the Naruto franchise. The first series lasted nine seasons, while Naruto Shippuuden began its first on February 15, 2007.
From volume 28 onward, the series takes a new setting, taking place 2½ years after the previous volume. While simply referred to as Part II in the manga, the anime gave this part of the series the name Naruto: Shippuuden (translated as Hurricane Chronicles). Between where volume 27 leaves off and the beginning of volume 28, to distance the gap between the manga and anime, the anime adds a series of filler episodes totalling 85.
Naruto Shippuuden tells the story of a matured and older cast from the original series. After training for 2½ years with Jiraiya, Naruto Uzumaki, now fifteen, returns to Konoha, reunites with the friends he left behind, and reforms the original Team 7, excluding Sasuke Uchiha. Unlike the original series, the organization of Akatsuki, which played a minor role earlier, takes on the main antagonist factor in their attempts of world domination. All of Naruto’s classmates have matured and improved in the ranks, some more than others. Naruto Shippuuden debuted in the Philippines’ Free-TV on January 28, 2008 via ABS-CBN’s Weekday Hero Zone. The Philippines is the first ever TV Station outside Japan to broadcast Naruto Shippuuden
Two and a half years have passed since the events of the first series, and Naruto Uzumaki returns to Konoha from his long training. Naruto soon discovers while he has been out training, all of his friends have advanced, leaving him the only Genin in his age group. To boot, Gaara has even became the Kazekage of his village.
There has been no new news about the whereabouts of Sasuke Uchiha, but Naruto hopes that he will someday find, and bring him home where he belongs. After reuniting with his friends, he is assigned a mission in which he must battle against Kakashi again like he did so many years ago to officially become a Genin. However this time Sakura and Naruto manage to grab a bell and thus, Team Kakashi is formed.
Just as they have finished up an emergency mission from the Sand Village was recieved, stating that Akatsuki attacked their village, and kidnapped the Fifth Kazekage, Gaara. Akatsuki are targeting Jinchuriki (those with demons sealed within them), and therefore Naruto is in danger as well. With the help of Team Gai, and the Sand Village, can Naruto save Gaara before it’s too late?
A young ninja from Konoha who encases the spirit of a demonic fox that attacked his village around the time of his birth. His primary motivation throughout the series is to become Hokage, or in other words, the village leader. During the beginning of the first series, Naruto was a simple-minded prankster who wished for acceptance. However, as the series progresses, Naruto develops into a more much mature character, although he still retains some of his childhood traits. Naruto possesses a fierce determination, always confident he can complete a given task with relative ease. Because of the demon fox within him, Naruto has access to its great chakra reserves, allowing him to perform jutsu that someone of his rank would ordinarily be incapable of using.
Sakura initially has an infatuation for Sasuke, praising him at every juncture, and heaping scorn upon the less skilled Naruto. Over the course of the series, she begins to shed this singularly driven persona, and grows more appreciative and accepting of Naruto. After training under Tsunade for two-and-a-half years, Sakura acquires two abilities that rely directly on her precise chakra control. The first and most common of these two is her ability to heal wounds, giving her the position as her team’s medical ninja. Due to the speed and proficiency with which she can heal others, many characters have noted Sakura to be more talented than medical ninja with far more experience.
He was added to Team 7 as a replacement for Sasuke Uchiha. As a member of Root, Sai has been trained to have no emotions, a trait meant to make him impartial to his missions. Sai is a talented artist, and claims to have drawn tens of thousands of pictures. Sai’s drawing ability doubles as the source behind his jutsu; he is able to bring to life anything he draws on a scroll he carries with him.
Like his father, Kakashi is considered a genius shinobi, graduating from the Ninja Academy at age 5 and achieving the rank of Chunin at 6. At the age of 13, Kakashi achieved Jonin status. He is fairly dispassionate compared to his subordinates and fellow Jonin, almost never showing emotion. He often says things that sound harsh but mean well, such as suggesting that Rock Lee brought his career-ending injuries on himself by using forbidden taijutsu techniques. While Kakashi is willing to help his students, he remains somewhat aloof and unwilling to let anyone get too close to him, noting that he no longer has anyone important to him. Though he evasively says that he has “many hobbies” when asked about himself, he is commonly seen reading Make-Out Paradise, an adult and probably pornographic novel authored by Jiraiya that is a runaway bestseller in the Naruto world.
In the two-and-a-half years he spends with Orochimaru, Sasuke’s goal to kill Itachi takes precedence above all else, such that he is willing to give his body to Orochimaru if it means gaining the strength he needs. Sasuke also comes to abandon his loyalties to others once they are of no further use to him, turning against Orochimaru after reaching the conclusion he can learn nothing else of value. While he pays no allegiance to his allies, old or new, Sasuke cannot bring himself to harm those he has never met before, and makes it a point to prevent their deaths when possible.
He is the youngest child of the Fourth Kazekage, making him the younger brother of Kankuro and Temari, and is commonly known as “Gaara of the Desert”. Gaara is a foil character to Naruto, having virtually the same childhood experiences, but reacting to it in a much different way, resulting in numerous comparisons and contrasts with Naruto. As the host of Shukaku, Gaara possesses the ability to manipulate sand, typically moving it through the air to serve various purposes. During the two and a half year time gap, he has become The Fifth Kazekage of the Sand Village, and is later attacked by Akatsuki seeking Shukaku.
