AnimeLocal
Hey does anyone know a good free safe video codec that I can get my hands on? I was messing around with Sony Vegas when I noticed I can't open my AVI files, and considering that 60% of my anime is AVI, this could be a problem. I just don't know what will work and what will be safe.
Koby
avi is a container, not a codec. Check to see what the actual codec is in your avi files. avi supports divx, xvid, h264, h263, etc...

I pretty much got all my AVI files from this site throughout the years.
Koby
Your video player will have a properties tab usually or you can use the software called MediaInfo.

It should tell you what codec the avi has. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
DarkDream787
AVI isnt a codec, its a video container which usually holds divx or xvid video codecs in them. Just look up either Combined Community Codec Pack or K-Lite Codec pack and install one of those. (You dont need both) Im betting that will help. Their codec packs with lots of codecs included in them for playback. You probly wont ever have an issue playing back something once you get one of these. If you already have one of those, its possible it's a bad avi file. As for finding out the codec, theres a really great program called MediaInfo. It will give you just about every detail about your media file. Edited July 28, 2015 by DarkDream787

Also the AVI files are a bit older but they were working before.
DarkDream787
I personally prefer Combined Community Codec Pack and have always referred to it in torrent descriptions. Their both safe, K-Lite Codec pack seemed to like to take over my computer more than I wanted, but then again I haven't used it in years because of CCCP. It's possible it could have changed. If your not sure, just go ahead and try CCCP and see if you like it or not. I promise it's not going to virus up your computer. http://www.cccp-project.net/ Just choose download CCCP, you dont need the insurgent. Their both pretty much just a bunch of bundled in a package video and audio codecs for media players to use. AnimeLocal
What exactly are you trying to do? Why are you opening your avi's in Vegas? I make amvs for Youtube and some of my files are in avi (ie Ouran Host Club, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood). I had DixX for a while but they are not free anymore and now I need a codec for my avi files. I mean my alternative is redownload all my files to mp4 or get a codec of some sort. Divx codec isnt free? thats new info to me. I believe its included for free in that codec pack, unless your talking about an editing software. Did you try the codec pack like mentioned? Will the video now open correctly in Sony Vegas?
JohnFlower
You'd need plugins for other codecs to work in Vegas. Good luck with that. Edited July 31, 2015 by JohnFlower

Well, I know for sure if you can open the AVI file in your media player, then you should have that codec already. I have not worked with AVI files in a long time because that container is considered obsolete and not really used much anymore because MKV has superior features. I just tried opening a few AVI files I do still happen to have in my Sony Vegas Pro 13 and it will not open any of mine for me either, yet I know for 100% certain that I have that codec installed and if you installed that codec pack or can play them, I know you have it as well. This is apparently a Sony Vegas Pro issue and or it needs an add on/adjustment to be able to support AVI files. Perhaps an older version would work with them? If you are going to be working with AVI files, I recommend you try a program called VirtualDubMod. It works with AVI files well and was pretty much made for them and editing them. It also supports AVISynth usage, so its the best program I know of for working with AVI files and can get you great quality AVI encodes or files when use correctly. If you want to take the video and audio out of an AVI file for working with them separately, this will also enable you to do that. I will PM you a link to that VirtualDubMod program. You can also just convert it to a format Sony Vegas Pro can work with if you are deperate enough to use that program. EDIT: I looked on google and it seems this is a common thing and there's several fixes/suggestions found on google. You can also try a few of them out. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=sony+vegas+pro+13+cant+open+avi Edited August 2, 2015 by DarkDream787
