It seems that Kaido's men only defeated the Minks because they used Caesar's poison gas weapon to destroy the country, and while everyone was dying (as referenced when Wanda remarked they would have lost everyone if not for the courage and compassion of the Strawhats) it looks as if Sanji/Chopper made Caesar clean up the poison http://z.mfcdn.net/store/manga/106/79-795.0/compressed/h005.jpg so they could save them.
