  1. Need something new to watch any suggestions?  Happy Holidays!

  2. :-) both have their own kind of bloat / adware. just the same if that is what the op wants so be it. however, he was talking about a surface so unlikely.
  3. Salem, op read for yourself, if you care about what edition of windows you get. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_10_editions http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/windows-10-will-have-seven-editions-heres-how-to-tell-which-is-for-you/ You can always check woot.com / newegg / bestbuy for a good deal on a laptop. Also http://www.pricewatch.com/ is a good resource and if you use amazon try camelcamelcamel.com . I know you likely don't care much about the edition of windows you get, you just didn't want the manufacture and vendor bloat. I did overgeneralize to keep it simple and make it easy to understand. Please note Enterprise is normally for organizations with IT departments that is why i talked about AD and applocker. We are talking about Enterprise on a personal laptop. Also I didn't recommend Alienware, I made a statement about dell owning Alienware. It was a random thought that i added for information.
  4. Here is an idea, look for surplus computers in your state. Well do a search for surplus sales in your state. My state has a surplus auction site and your can find computers and servers on it sometimes pallets full for 10-$15. The deal is look for engineering computers more states are on a 3-5 year rotation on computers. A 7-8 year old engineering computer would be a Dell Precision Workstation T3400 and have at least a 3.0Ghz dual core "i5". In my state if you win you have to go pick it up they don't ship. Also that state would have to pay for disposal of computers but as a civilian it doesn't cost me anything. So I can take what I don't want to the transfer station for free. I'm just putting it out as an option.
  5. If you're not an IT guy, don't have an IT guy, or are not going to monitor windows updates for key vulnerabilities then Enterprise LTSB is not for you. Yes, it has less OS fluff/bloat but that doesn't make it the go to windows OS. Basically if your asking for advise on a laptop you don't want the LTSB version. Next if your on this site your likely to want media play N means "not with media player". That and you can always remove media player. What kind of networking do you want to do with your laptop? Do you plan to use the laptop with Active Directory Services and have a server control it's policies and remote diagnostics? That is what Enterprise was made for, IT departments to manage businesses resources. Yes, it includes applocker but do you need it? Basically you're looking for an OEM Windows 10 professional that will keep you from having bloatware, the OS has it's own bloat but there are some cool apps in the store so you don't want to give that up. Any Laptop you get will have bloat but if price is not an issue go Dell or Sony they back their warranties the best. Dell owns alienware as well. If you don't want to buy a clean OEM copy of Windows, no big deal, spend the first day with your new laptop uninstalling all ad / sample / trial and manufacture software. Once you have it cleaned and your base software installed ghost or image it for a backup to restore from.
  6. For mass storage like movies, anime, music, pictures you can't beat the cost of spinning drives get two and mirror them. For games & applications a ssd would be great but if the cost is to much you want a 7200rpm or a 10000rpm drive. Why the change in games & applications? Well they have active changing data not just data execution. Lats say you wanted to use a drive to convert videos, then you would want the faster or ssd diver because of the data speeds. Once you got the video in the format/codec your going to keep it in for ever then you'll be fine with storing it on a slower drive. What you are after is the middle games and storage at budget, I would say 7,200RPM hdd with 64MB of cache. As said above if you can swing it the WD black are made for SAN/NAS unit and hard good performance, reliability, and made to run like a workhorse 24/7. If the cost is to high go with a Seagate or Hitachi. Also note that HGST is owned by WD. If the cost of a 4TB 7200 RPM is just to much to swing right now try to go from something like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00B99JU4S/ it's faster then a 5400 but not a real 7200rpm and may do the job for you.
  7. keep an eye on woot.com lots of the refurbished laptop will work get for your needs. I get dell and asus for my mother and young non-gamer children. hp touch screen under 370 AMD Quad-Core 2.2GHz, 750GB SATA, 8GB DDR3 http://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-15-6-amd-quad-core-a8-touch-laptop-5?ref=cp_cnt_wp_2_3 hp 17" lappy under 300 AMD Quad-Core 1.8GHz, 500GB SATA, 4GB DDR3, http://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-17-3-amd-a4-quad-core-laptop-5?ref=cp_cnt_wp_1_1 i would go for the $370 one, myself. it has touchscreen more ram, storage, and cpu. Both likely have the slow 5400rpm drives but for your need its not an issue.
