Ashford Academy Students Black Knights Roster Britannia Army

Storyline Introduction

On August 10, 2010, a.t.b. (the Imperial calendar), the Holy Empire of Britannia overpowered Japanese forces and conquered the country with their new robotic weapons, the Knightmare Frames, in less than a month. In the aftermath of Britannia's invasion, Japan lost its freedom, its rights, and even its name, becoming Area 11 of the Britannian Empire. The Japanese people, renamed as "Elevens", were forced to survive in ghettos, while Britannians lived in first-class settlements. Rebel elements persisted, however, as pockets of Japanese organizations who struggled against the Empire for the independence of Japan.

After his father, the Emperor of Britannia, failed to prevent the assassination of his mother, an attack which also left his sister blind and crippled, the young prince Lelouch vowed to destroy Britannia. Seven years later, living in Area 11, he encounters a mysterious girl named C.C., who gives him the power of Geass. With it, he finally has the power that he needs to defeat Britannia and fulfill his two wishes: to seek revenge for his mother and to construct a world in which his beloved sister can live happily.

Characters

Lelouch Lamperouge
Lelouch Lamperouge Seemingly an ordinary 17-year-old student at the Ashford Academy in the Britannian colony of Area 11 (Japan), he is in actuality Lelouch vi Britannia, the exiled Eleventh Prince of the Britannian Imperial Family and son of the Emperor Charles di Britannia by the late Empress Marianne vi Britannia. Formerly seventeenth in line for the throne, he was disowned for questioning his father's cold regard following his mother's assassination and the crippling of his sister Nunnally vi Britannia. Seven years later, he obtains an ability known as Geass, which enables him to compel others to behave as he wishes. Seeking to build a better world for his sister, he pursues the destruction of Britannia under his alter-ego — Zero.

Suzaku Kururugi
Suzaku Kururugi Suzaku Kururugi is Lelouch's childhood friend and son of Japan's last prime minister, Genbu Kururugi. He is both a secondary protagonist and antagonist of the series, aligned against Zero's Black Knights but nevertheless intent on changing the Britannian Empire for the better. He claims that achieving results by wrong or illegal methods is meaningless, wanting to change Britannia from within. Suzaku is an Honorary Britannian and part of the Britannia army, later becoming the pilot of the experimental Knightmare Frame Lancelot as a member of the R&D Division. In the second season, Suzaku is granted a position in the Knight of Rounds by the Emperor for his capture of Zero. His current title and rank is Knight of Seven. Suzaku desires to become the Knight of One, a status that will allow him to rule Area 11 by his choosing.

C.C.
C.C. C.C. (pronounced C2) is a seemingly immortal, green-haired girl who bestows the power of Geass upon Lelouch under the condition he grant her greatest wish. She passively oversees Lelouch's missions to ensure that he is not killed. In the past, her abilities caught the interest of Britannia and she was imprisoned for experimentation purposes.

Nunnally Lamperouge
Nunnally Lamperouge Lelouch's younger sister. Injured in her mother Marianne's brutal assassination, she is wheelchair-bound and blind from psychological trauma. Following her return to the Imperial Family in the second season, she has re-assumed her birth name, Nunnally vi Britannia, and is at her own request appointed Viceroy of Area 11. It is on her behalf that Lelouch pursues the destruction of Britannia and the forging of a peaceful world.

Kallen Stadtfeld
Kallen Stadtfeld Kallen Stadtfeld is half-Japanese and half-Britannian, though she believes herself to be Japanese at heart and prefers to be known by her birth name, Kallen Kozuki. She is a member of a Japanese resistance cell and later joins Zero's Order of the Black Knights, where she is appointed leadership of the Zero Squadron, Zero's personal bodyguards. She is one of the Order's most talented pilots, and pilots the unique Guren Mk-II. Her devotion to Zero is unmatched among the rest of the Black Knights.

Rolo Lamperouge
Rolo Lamperouge Introduced in the second season as a student at Ashford Academy and Lelouch's brother, but is secretly a Britannian intelligence agent and assassin assigned to observe Lelouch. He assumes this position following Lelouch's memory erasure at the end of the first season. He treasures a locket given to him by Lelouch on his birthday. He is the pilot of the Vincent Prototype. Rolo possesses a Geass power in his right eye that allows him to freeze the subjective experience of time for all persons within a given range. He is manipulated by Lelouch into supporting the Black Knights.

Li Xingke
Li Xingke A military officer in the Chinese Federation, said to equal Lelouch in strategy and Suzaku in strength. The son of a low-ranked official, Li climbed his way through the ranks of the government with the intent to transform it. He arrives in Area 11 as a bodyguard to the Federation's consul, Gao Hai. He is extremely skilled in swordsmanship and constantly carries a sword by his side. He also pilots the Shenhu Knightmare Frame.

Knightmare Frames

Knightmare Frames, or simply Knightmares, are a form of mecha in the Sunrise anime series Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Knightmare Frames are humanoid war machines developed by the Holy Britannian Empire. Unveiled during the invasion of Japan, Knightmare Frames are almost exclusively used in place of the practically obsolete main battle tanks. The name "Knightmare Frame" is a play on the word nightmare and a knight's mare.

Knightmare Frames achieve dominance in combat through the use of 'Landspinners', self-propelled roller skates attached to the ankles of the machines which allows them to achieve high mobility and speeds on most terrain. They are commonly equipped with at least one 'Factsphere' open sensor, which has thermographic capability and an array of other data-collection functions which are collated in real-time for simplified presentation to a Knightmare Frame cockpit. The Factspheres are commonly protected under a layer of armor that may be retracted in circumstances requiring higher system sensitivity. Knightmare Frames are piloted from a cockpit set in the protruding 'hump back' in the unit. The cockpit is a self-contained control center which can be ejected in case of emergency. The technical term for a Knightmare Frame pilot is Devicer, and Royal Panzer Infantry (RPI) is the official designation for common Knightmare Frame infantry within the Britannian Army.

Knightmare Frames are powered by the Yggdrasil Drive, a fictional energy source. Its centerpiece is a sakuradite device called the Core Luminous, wherein a cube of unknown composition is weightlessly suspended. The cube revolves at high speeds during a state of drive activation known as Yggdrasil Resonance, apparently involved in the conduction of electricity. The technology is named after the Yggdrasil. The drive is recharged through a sakuradite energy filler. Typical Knightmare Frame armament includes shoulder or wrist-mounted rocket anchors called Slash Harkens. Mass-production models also carry handheld rifles and a number of Chaos Mines, cylindrical air burst grenades that spray deadly shrapnel over a small area. Less common equipment, though more widespread as the series progresses, are Maser Vibration Swords (MVS), a form of vibroblade which oscillates at a high ratio to cut through almost anything, and Hadron Cannons, powerful energy cannons which can obliterate almost anything in their path.

Late in the first season, Float Systems, either integrated or attached via an optional backpack, also fall into common use. Float Systems are atmospheric flotation devices capable both of suspending extremely high-mass structures in stationary flight and moving them through the air at decent speeds. It requires gyroscopic stabilization. Originally, the immense size of the Float System made it suitable only for enabling the aerial transport of traditional land cruisers, but they are eventually miniaturized into Knightmare-sized Float Units. The Black Knights' Flight-Glider Wings are a derivative technology.

Geass

Geass is a mysterious ability which certain people can bestow upon others; C.C. is the most prominent character who grants the power of Geass. The Geass manifests differently in each individual, possibly related to their inner desires. The power of Geass increases with use, and should the user lack the willpower, they may be consumed by it, which was the case with Mao. C.C. calls Geass the Power of the King, and though she is unable to use the power herself, she is immune to the power being used on her. However, people who have Geass are not immune to the Geass effects of others. The Geass is represented by a glowing, bird-shaped symbol.

Every Geass, while powerful, has its own unique set of restrictions, limitations, or idiosyncrasies. These factors allow a Geass to be defeated, or its power limited, by someone who is aware of its characteristics. All Geass abilities that have thus far appeared within the canon of the television series have been related to the mind, influencing such things as will, thought, memory, and perception. Geass abilities in the manga sidestory Knightmare of Nunnally have no such limitations. According to an English edition of Newtype, the power of Geass has something to do with the very existence of humankind, and it may be used to destroy or transform just about anything. "Geass" may be an intentional corruption of the word geas or geis, a term for a type of magical contract in Irish mythology.
